Army Nursing

Anyone have any experience with army nursing? What is the recruitment/screening/application and training process like? Where were you stationed? Just curious.

Very competitive. For a new grad (non-ROTC) it's impossible to join. For most specialties 2 years experience minimum is needed and even then there are only a few spots every year that are open.

Being stationed at varying posts depends on a myriad of factors. Training includes BOLC at Fort Sam Houston and specialty courses.

There are about a million threads on Army nursing, use the search function.

You seem like a real peachy person and I looked there are no recent army threads that answer my questions from above

He's being honest. The Army is actively cutting its nurses right now through an involuntary separation process — if you're selected, you're out.

There is no mission for new grads via direct commission (non-ROTC) pathways. If you are experienced in a specialty with board certifications and a high undergrad GPA, then a healthcare recruiter may be interested.

When I was selected for direct commission, the application process took months. You just missed the selection board, it only occurs in November. The application is exhaustive; the form is roughly 50 pages long. You must also pass height/weight and a pre-commissioning physical exam. Any chronic issues require a waiver, and waivers are few and far between right now. The Army is incredibly picky right now, as they can choose to be.

I blogged extensively about officer basic training. If you click on the "articles" tab you'll be able to find them.

Yeah I was not asking specifically about new grads being selected and I was also not looking to do it now so missing the November selection board does not concern me. Again, I was only CURIOUS about army nursing in general

Sorry, I thought I was covering the recruitment/application/screening process as you requested in your original post. I didn't only discuss new grads in my reply. Anyway.... There is an article about military nursing with links to recruiter info if you ever move past curiosity — just make sure you speak with an AMEDD (healthcare) recruiter because the average recruiter does not understand nursing recruitment. Best of luck in your nursing career.

I'm very peachy, thanks.

As Pixie said, she blogged about BOLC which is the entry course for Army AMEDD officers. In addition I have probably replied to 10+ threads in the last year (this info doesn't change week to week) regarding general Army nursing questions.

So yes the threads are out there.

If they are SPECIFIC questions, we can answer them.
