Army Nurse Corp Reserves advice/input on experience 2016

Published

Finally after clearing MEPs, completing 50+page application, finding references and signing my DA61 sheet my packet will go before Army Nurse Board Nov.15 2016, hopefully if I get selected I will comission as a 1stLT - just wanted any advice or 2 cents for those who have had military experience as a nurse.

I have 2 boys and I chose the reservist route vs active to prevent them from having to move around too much and being able to live close at home to them. I've been an ICU nurse for almost 8 years and have always wanted to serve my country and this website has given me so much information so for the military nurses out there how is it? Why did you choose reserve vs active or vice versa

I live in Houston according to my recruiter I will probably drill in Fort Sam in SA one weekend a month I was hoping there would be someone out there who can tell me about the experience, as far as drill weekends, scheduling, juggling civilian job and life etc. my recruiter has done well filling me in but reading personal stories on here is always great input as well.

Thanks again and if someone can reach out to me personally please PM me with your email address I'd love to hear about your experience

Maybe a couple pairs of utility uniforms (camo) are a couple hundred dollars. However, don't forget the various dress uniforms, alterations, medals, ribbons, etc. I spent $1200.

i agree with this. Husband is currently an active duty army officer and he spent at least 1500-2000 when he graduated college and first commissioned. OCPs (camo) are around 100 a pair, you'll definitely want to have 2-3. One pair of boots is about 150. Then you have PT uniforms which are tshirts, shorts, and cold weather gear, and the most expensive is ASUs (dress blues) which after all the alterations and add ons are normally about 1000 dollars. Luckily you'll only have to buy those once. So idk who told you 500 for uniforms lol

Sorry i dont have a husband that is an active duty officer.. My recruiter said 500 to start (never said it was accurate) but i appreciate your info and thx jfratian for the feedback as well! ERnurse2016b seems like we will have to budget around 1200-2000 to be on the safe side. Best of luck

wasn't trying to be rude! just wouldn't want anyone to think there was only 500 dollars worth of uniforms needed. save all your receipts and turn them in at tax time :)

@ktRNBSN,, Still hanging out on the OML,,,, Not sure what is going on.. I was hoping there would be a scroll release this week and we would come off. That is why I'm interested to see who has scrolled and when the new one comes out.

Any of you guys with experience able to provide more specifics on cost? I've heard different things (the Army provides a cash advance, you're eligible for USAA commissioning loan, etc) but have been able to back up none of them
