Are you required to go to class?

Published

I know this probably sounds silly but are you required to go to class:chuckle I was talking with a friend of mine who is also applying to a nursing program this next fall in another state. She mentioned that for most of her pre reqs she really didnt go to class other then when she absoultly had to(quiz/test/lab)

I was wondering if anyone else did/does this? I am just curious :)

Its college...no one is making you come to class, but its a good idea to. You can pretty much miss any lecture you want, but you need to come to lab.

Ummm...no. If you're absolutely sure that you know the course material front & back, you could probably skip as much as you want. Until you flunk, that is.

By skipping class after class, you tend to get your instructor a bit peeved at you. This can bite you in the end.

Most students do poorly on their tests without going to class. In some courses, attendance is part of your grade.

Attendance may not be required BUT......there are quite a few reasons to want to go to class above and beyond learning the material.

First off, when it comes time for letters of recommendation (if required for your program) you will want at least one from an instructor. You'll be hard pressed to get a glowing recommendation if the professor doesn't even remember you, reguardless of whatever grade you got.

Also, if you plan on applying to the program at the same school you take your pre-reqs you have to consider that the selection commitee may ask your instructors about you, especially those in the biology/science department. Again, its better to be remembered for being the student that worked hard, always came to class, participated in class discussions and got a B than to be the forgotten student that never showed up and somehow got an A.

Also, it gets you into a good habit. Once you get into a program attendance will be mandatory so you may as well get used to being present, and punctual.

Finally,I've noticed that good attendance gets brownie points for those on the cusp of a grade even if the instructor never mentions points given or taken for attendance. If you're a couple points away from a higher grade you'll be more likely to get the higher grade if you showed up, participated, and made the instructor remember you.

You pay to go to college. Do you want to waste your money?? I never missed a day of class unless I absolutely couldn't get out of bed, which was maybe once a semester, and never for my nursing classes. You get better grades if you go to class and hear what the teachers have to say. It's what you are paying for. Get your money's worth.

I personally am planning on going to class :lol2: & always have unless there was a REALLY good reason. I was just sort of shocked when she said she hardly ever went. She has a great GPA 3.8-3.9 I cant remember which but it was one of the 2 I dont know how she does it. I dont think I could not going to class....

She could have 4.0 GPA if she had gone to class like me:D

WOW... in all my classes it is mandatory. And if you miss 3 times, the professor has the right to drop you. :(
