Are too many certifications a bad thing?

As a new RN grad I've been working hard at attaining all kinds of certifications and course completions. ACLS, PALS, ATLS, Rapid STEMI identification, Stroke assessment, with NRP, TNCC, and CCRN coming up soon. Thankfully as an echocardiographer I've convinced the hospital I work at to send me to all these classes on thier dime. But I'm not a staff RN here yet.

Does a med/surg hiring manager look at that and think "he'll jump ship and go to speciality critical care as soon as he can." Does that reduce my chances for a job?

How would the comments of the OP reflect the mental state of 1000s of new grads?

True, but he's not going to work in the ICU anyway. Too slow, ya know. Someone with his level of awesomeness should be on a helicopter, and nothing less.

If he's so awesome he should just go to med school. He'd fit in real good with the ego.

^^^ I'm sensing more and more arrogance from the OP.

I sensed it from his first post.

Because I was curious.

Didn't get the answers you expected is more like it.

Just as a sidebar, since Ruger started this thread he has, apparently, given up on finding an ER, ICU, M/S or any other floor position. He is now taking all those fancy certs with him shopping for a home health position.

I am considering starting out my RN career in Home Care. What skills and techniques can a person learn and utilize in a Home Care setting?

Oh, good. I feel better now, that I know that Mr. Awesome is pursuing a job in which he will work unsupervised, as he continues on the path to self-fulfillment.

Specializes in M/S, LTC, Corrections, PDN & drug rehab.

Doesn't that make you feel all warm & fuzzy inside?

Specializes in Infection Prevention, Public Health.

I don't know. My feeling was more that he lacks self awareness and truly was unable to see how he was presenting himself. And he did show humility for the first few rounds of rough justice. But the onslaught kept coming. When he saw the feathers and the tar was about to boil, he did take his numerous toys -er- certifications and run for the hills with an AN horde in hot pursuit.

Lol. It's kinda scary to think of him all by himself. :/ For so many, many reasons.

Specializes in Telemetry.

I usually take previous posting history into account and some of his concerned me that he doesn't understand when some of these certs will be appropriate.

Not understanding why PALS can't be used in field unless you are certified first responder with protocols and proper meds etc.

I may catch holy heck from HH nurses, but M/S and ICU wasn't exciting enough for him, so he goes to HH?? Really?
