Are there any Illinois hospitals I should avoid?

U.S.A. Illinois

Please PM me if you don't feel comfy posting. I am mainly looking in the Chicago area, and possibly Central Illinois.

I'm PO'd at NWMH. I had an interview with them that which I thought was WONDERFUL. After the interview the Hiring Manager told me that she is going to have HR call me in a couple days. I toook it as the Hiring Manager liked me, and she really seemed to during the interview. A week went by and I got no call, so I called the HR dept to follow up, and I got the "She is still interviewing for the position and hasn't made a decision yet" line. Ok. Another week went by and I got the letter form the Hiring Manager stating that after she looked at her staffs schedules, and made a few tweaks to the schedule, she is no longer hiring for that RN position...and then thanked me for my time. That's real organized. :uhoh3: If it's the truth.

Hi, I was wondering if you took a position with them? If yes how is it going? I am looking at them for the same reason you are....tuition!!!!! I am interested in Cardiac. Anyone have info? Thanks.

whats the pay like for RN fresh out with a BSN?????????

I worked at University of Chicago hospitals prior to relocating out of state. I primarily worked on the Stem Cell Transplant Unit and it was wonderful. The staff, patients, physicians, managers were all so nice. Many of the patients were on the until for several months, so by the end of their stay they felt like family.

The manager was awesome too. very flexible with staffing issues. Pay scale comparable to the other hospitals.

Can't really speak for other units though. I've heard mixed reviews from other departments.

I just got hired NWMH and U of C and I chose the U of C job because they offered me three 12's and the nurse manager was so nice. They have very good ratings according to US news and World Report and a friend of mine worked there for 7 years before moving and loved it. they are trying to get magnet status and the pay much better. Their nurses are unionized and I am very happy with my decision. I start on June 5th! I am so excited, now I just have to pass my boards!

Hey JRA-

I'm starting at U of C this summer, too! I'm going to cardiac telemetry. I chose UofC over Rush and Loyola because of the full tuition reimbursement and the request days off. When are you taking boards? I'm not starting until July 24 because I was told I couldn't begin until they had my unofficial results. Have you graduated already? Thanks!

this is soooo weird.

i was offered a position on the BMT unit at U of C, and i have to let them know by this week if i want it...i really liked the unit and the unit manager, but i was unsure about the culture/atmosphere and the way nurses were treated...my other option is in a smaller hospital, it's a gero position which would probably be my last choice option (my 2 first choices are peds and oncology) BUt they have a tuition forgiveness program, plus they have an awesome residency program...it's also closer to my house...

i also like the tuition reimbursement at U of C....what would you do?

and hey, chellebelle - if i choose U of C, i'd be starting 7/24, too...how cool! what did you think of their residency program in conjunction with the art institute?? and what do you mean by request days off ? (guess i wasnt listening too closely at the interview :)

Hi there,

Just a head's up...please do not mistake NMH's HR for your manager. Please understand that NMH's HR is NOTORIOUS.

edited to add:

Sorry that you didn't know to call the manager first and NOT the daggumed HR!

Honestly the manager could've been told some whoo ha by HR too about you interviewing at other places. Darn.

from a fellow former frustrated who works at NMH and is really glad about it now,

So I know this is probably way out of the area you are looking at, but Sarah Bush Lincoln in Mattoon is horrible. I would avoid it like the plague. Too many reasons to state, but I can if you want.

I have been contacted repeatedly contacted by Provena out of Danville, anyone tell me anything about this facility. I am currently working, and I do NOT plan on giving up my current job. I just want something that I can work at a couple of days a week and no more. I really don't want to do bedside nursing, but feel I don't have an option. Anyway - please please be very candid with me about Provena, I have had nothing but bad luck with jobs lately and don't want to go into something that is not worth my time and I will be miserable at.

stay away from community hospital of ottawa, illinois valley community hospital and st mary's hospital in streator. These are very small hospitals and they will promise you the world then when you start work, you work a few days and then get "on calls" for 2 bucks an hour. Very clicky too. Manager at one which I won't mention is awful to work for, has that whiny, run your fingers across a chalkboard sound.
