Are these holidays off the norm?

My new job (I start next week, yay!) offers 8 paid holidays off:

- New Year's Day

- July 4

- Labor Day

- Thanksgiving Day

- Friday after Thanksgiving

- Christmas Day

- 1 personal "floating holiday" to be used at my discretion

- Birthday holiday to be used 30 days prior to birthday through 30 days after birthday

The handbook goes on the say that if a holiday falls on a weekend, it is the company's discretion whether to close the Friday before or Monday after the holiday.

I have been a PRN hospital nurse working nearly full-time hours for 8 years, so this is my first job working full-time M-F. Does the above look fair and reasonable for a full-time position? Thanks!

At my last job (not in nursing). Black Friday was a paid holiday, and Christmas Eve was often (not always) an unofficial half-day.

I've never worked anywhere where Christmas Eve was a holiday. I am surprised at Memorial day though.

Wow - no such thing as a paid holiday . . . we get time and half if we work, but nothing if we dont, new years eve, memorial day, July 4th, labor day, thanksgiving day and Christmas day... time and half stops and starts at 0000 - no bonus if your not on the schedule, and if you ask for it off and get called in last minute - no urgent pay...

My job in the ICU was very much like this...and if I was off on a holiday, I had eleventy billion people asking me if I would switch with them, work half the day for them, etc. (Not that I didn't understand, but stil...)

Thanks. This is really helpful. I was just thinking, maybe I should've asked someone in-the-know about this before I accepted the job offer. I'm pretty happy, because this is the first time in my career I get paid while having holidays off and I will also acrrue PTO. :)

Just make sure that it is 8 paid holidays OFF, rather than 8 paid holidays. You might get paid premium for working them but not have all of them off.
