Hi,
this may sound very akward. I am a gay male, and I am an LPN living in Canada. I have met a lot of gay RN's, but never met any LPN's. I was wondering if there was any gay males who share the same career as I do, please don't be shy to write...........
ciao :):welcome:

Hi Cincyohia,
Thanks for the reply. How are you enjoying your studies? What made you decide to become an LPN. Here in Quebec, LPN's are known as Registared Nursing Assistants, but we can still call ourselves LPN's. Anyways, write back......ciao :):welcome:

I'm a gay, male LPN in PA soon moving to FL to be closer to my baby sister. I love my job, but do plan on doing the RN thing when the loans for the LPN are paid off.

I am a male RN and I know a few male LPN's. When I was in nursing school, there were also a few guys who joined our class to become RN's. My good friend Peter is both gay and LVN. So yes, there are gay male LPN/LVN's out there.

My best friend is a male gay LPN. I think it is more common than most people think.

JUst a quick question from a heterosexual male regarding gay male nurses (lpn or rn) ...
Of all male nurses, do you believe there to be a higher proportion of gay men relative to all other careers? I know the stereo-type gay male-nurse and all of that...but do you think gay men are more likely to gravitate toward nursing as opposed to other professions??...or is this just another misconception???

I think the percentage is about what it might be in any other profession. Of the 7 or so guys in my nursing class when I graduated, I was the only gay male, and there was only one gay female. this is out of about 40 students.
I personally know several doctors, a fire-fighter, a few policemen, a number of construction workers, and the usual spattering of office people, factory workers, etc that happen to be gay men. There are gay men in just about every profession, whether they are "out" or not is their decision tho. I personally chose to be a nurse because several family members work as nurses, and I truly love the profession.
As corporations downsize, and jobs are lost overseas, I think more and more men will look into nursing as a second profession. That's how several of my classmates, both male and female, came into choosing nursing as a career.

I have a friend in MD who is an openly gay male. Met him through his partner who has been a great friend of mine for about 17 years... I could ask them how common it seems to be in that area of the country...

It's a big misconception that even I, as a gay man, had when I first started.
I've worked in big city hospitals on the east coast, midwest, and the south for nearly 10 years now.
On every unit I've ever worked, heterosexual men have always outnumbered gay men by far, so I definitely think it's a big misconception.
Almost every unit I've ever worked, with one exception, I've either been the only gay man or maybe one other on the unit, at least openly so.
All of my gay friends who work in other fields, business/office type settings, teachers, Texas oil rig off-shoremen, fishermen, lawyers, construction workers, and Houston cops all have more gay male colleagues or bosses than I've ever had in any one job setting.
