Are there Fluid/Electrolyte Mnemonics

Published

Hi Friends,

Does anyone have a mnemonics for learning all of the causes, signs and symptoms for the fluids, electrolytes.

As in hypocalcemia, hypercalcemia and the same for potasssium, sodium, Calcium, Mag, Phospherous.

I really appreciate your help. I've got less than 2 weeks to go and I'm freaking out.!!

Thank You!!

:eek::eek:

I have mnemonic creating software. If you could e-mail me your lists

and the sequence you want to memorize them I will create some mnemonic

sentences and phrases ane e-mail them back to you.

Thank You So Much Frank!

The list is starting with Serum Electrolytes:

1) Calcium, 2) Chloride, 3) Magnesium, 4) Phosphorus 5) Sodium

Then Arterial Blood Gases:

6) Metabolic Acidosis

7) Metabolic Alkalosis

8) Respiratory Acidosis

9) Respiratory Alkalosis

There may be more but I don't want to bother you with that now,

Thank you very, very much!!:up::up:

wecan11, I just sent you an email. Thanks

The list is starting with Serum Electrolytes:

1) Calcium, 2) Chloride, 3) Magnesium, 4) Phosphorus 5) Sodium

I did these first and I am working on the others.

Club Cramium Makes People Smart

Check Phone Machine Somebody Called (This one uses the 1st two letters of each term)

Crumbled Crickets Make Phony Sounds

Mighty Chrispy Phily Cheese Steaks

If these don't work let me know I have many more.

Should I proceed to work on the arterial blood gases?

Then Arterial Blood Gases:

6) Metabolic Acidosis

7) Metabolic Alkalosis

8) Respiratory Acidosis

9) Respiratory Alkalosis

Hypernatremia

Signs and Symptoms of Hypernatremia - FRIED

Fever, flushed skin

Restless

Increased fluid retention

Edema

Decreased urine output, dry mouth

Causes of Hypernatremia

Medications, meals

Osmotic diuretics

Diabetes insipidus

Excessive water loss

Low water intake

Hyponatremia

Signs and Symptoms

Stupor/coma

Anorexia

Lethargy

Tendon reflexes decreased

Limp muscles

Orthostatic hypotension

Seizures/headache

Stomach cramps

HyperkalemiaSigns and Symptoms

Muscle weakness

Urine - oliguria, anuria

Respiratory distress

Decreased cardiac contractility

ECG changes

Reflexes - hyperreflexia, areflexia

Treatment

Kayexalate - oral/rectal

Insulin

Na HCO3 (sodium bicarb)

Diuretics

Hypokalemia

Signs and Symptoms

6 L's

Lethargy

Leg cramps

Limp muscles

Low, shallow respirations

Lethal cardiac dysrhythmias

Lots of urine (polyuria)

HypercalcemiaSigns and Symptoms

I remember by the rhyme: Groans, Moans, Bones, Stones, and Overtones

Groans: constipation

Moans: pain - joint aches

Bones: loss of calcium from bones, bone metastasis

Stones: kidney stones

Overtones: psychiatric overtones - depression, confusion

Hypocalcemia

Signs and Symptoms

Convulsions

Arrhythmias

Tetany

Spasms, stridor

Alkalosis and Acidosis

Alkalosis - has a 'k' - Kicking the pH up

Acidosis - has a 'd' - Dropping the pH down

Solutions: Isotonic, Hypotonic, Hypertonic

Isotonic - "Same as I" - the solution used will be the same as normal body fluid composition. Fluids remain inside intravascular space.

Hypotonic - "Hypo, hippo" - the solution pulls fluid from the intravascular space into the ICF - the cell "swells like a hippo".

In order to retain these terms the first two letters of each word

probably will work best. There are many mnemonic phrases that

just use the first letter of each word however the terms will probably

be harder to recall.
