Applying to UMBSON, how important is patient care experience?

Published

Details about myself:

I am applying to the University of Maryland Baltimore School of Nursing for Fall of 2016. I am going into my junior year of college, I have to take one more year to finish up my pre-requisites and I am about to start my first year of ROTC. My GPA is a 3.52 and it has declined each semester from a 3.8 in my first semester. My TEAS score is in the upper 80s or lower 90s (I can't remember at the moment). Last Fall I became a certified EMT as a way of testing out whether I would like patient care. I enjoyed the course and labs but I never started working or volunteering in the field like I intended to.

It is my top priority to go to nursing school and I really want to get into UMB. This year I intend to raise my GPA to make it more obvious that I want this.

My question: It will be very difficult for me to make the time to work/volunteer as an EMT while studying full time, participating in ROTC and possibly continuing to work at my student job on campus. Would it be worth it to make time for a job as an EMT so that I can have patient care experience before starting nursing school?

Thank you in advance!!! I would really appreciate any advice on this subject. I'm not taking this decision lightly.
