Just dropped the application in the box at nursing dpt. on south campus. Good luck to everyone who's doing the same thing, and :bowingpurGod bless you all!
I got "A"s in all of my pre-requites, and alright score on my TEAS test, 85 national, and 85 regional. My grammar part of TEAS wasn't the best since I am an ESL, which is why my percentile isn't in the 90s. But hopefully I will be able to get in, after all, TCC is the only school I applied, I feel good about it.
Anyone else is out there?

first of all, i wanted to give a big congrats to all that got in! you deserve to celebrate! and for those on the waiting list, don't give up! several people apply to more than one school :) i'm finishing up my first semester, and then onto mental health this summer (i think you guys will have that your second summer). then in the fall when you start i will be in my 3rd of 5 semesters. i remember all too clearly lurking on this site from august-december of last yr lol!
a word of advice: jump on your "to-do list" asap. get your immunizations done (hep-b takes a while!) and get all your required physical forms, etc turned in as soon as you can. it will make life much easier on you. the textbooks are expensive, but lucky you guys get all summer to work extra hrs to pay for them! be glad it's not over christmas break that you're trying to do that unfortunantly they package some of the books with an online component thats required, so it's almost the same price to buy the book on amazon and get the online access seperately bc they charge so much for it individually. i would just buy them pre-packaged at the bookstore and save yourself time. feel free to buy the others online though and save some cash. at camp success they will scare the begeesus out of you and leave you feeling like you won't make it if you work, but trust me, it is possible. though i don't work 45 hrs anymore, i still put in a good 25-30 hrs/wk and i'm making it. i just don't have much of a social life :icon_roll it is different and it is hard, but, at least in my clinical group, most of us that get this far ar pretty darn smart and seem to have an aptitude for the field. when you are interested in the subject it doesn't seem to require as much studying bc you pay more attn the first time around in class. i'm working on 2 a's and a b so i'm pretty satisfied.
ok i'm done rambling now, so if you have any questions just ask!
thanks for the advise! my main concern for now is the insurance for the school. if you don't mind, would you share how much do you pay for the insurance and who are you with?
thanks!
Sorry so long w no response! Unfortunantly I'm on my dad's insurance since I'm considered a FT student (but only juntil I turn 23 this Nov) so I couldn't tell you how much it is. I do know that several students have gone through a contact that the school has. He deals specifically with finding nursing students affordable healthcare. Don't sweat it- it's required so they have to have some realistic options :)
txmommyof3. God is good isnt he. I think you might have responded to my other post or maybe not, but I was denied to 4 out of 5 schools, I kept praying and had faith and finally got my letter like you. Congratulations!! Good luck to all of you at TCC. I'll be attending Midwestern this year. And get this..how come our orientation is the saturday during the first week of school??? Yes, orientation is after classes, this is definitely throwing me off.
yeah it is. i have nothing to prepare my first week. she stated they do that because not everybody has moved up there yet in time, & im like well... if class starts on the 22nd. why wouldnt they have already moved up there =) sillllly advisors. well good luck to all of you on this journey!!
Congrats to the new class of Fall 2009/May 2011. I am finishing up my second semester, graduation is May 2010, and I have some advice as new student nurses:
But first, MOMMYOF3, you are so lucky to have been told your ranking on the alternate list, when I made alternate list and ended up sitting out a semester due to never being called, I was refused my number and I never could figure out where I stood (I CHECKED THE MAILBOX HOURLY....it was torture), BUT thankfully I made it in no problem the second time I applied and I'm so EXCITED for you to have been accepted as well!
For starters, DON'T GO CRAZY buying every book that they throw at you. For Foundatations you will need, the KOZIER and ERB book for theory, a good CARE PLAN BOOK for clinical, a good DRUG BOOK again for clinical, ELKINS and POTTER book for skills and the Craig math book, thats really it. I NEVER USED THE LILLEY PHARMACOLOGY book, nor the SWEARINGEN book, if you must buy these books..ebay/amazon/half price book store them. I would buy KOZIER, and ELKINS/POTTER books from the bookstore (due to online components) and all the rest can be found at bn.com and/or other bookstores. Hopefully using these sites/stores will reduce your text book expense. Also y'all are lucky, we are the last class to do ATI testing, which runs us about $75 a semester in addition to tution and books.
Second piece of advice; Stock up on blank paper and printer ink!!! Learn how to print front and back on one sheet to reduce waste. OMG, I have never printed off so many notes, some notes are in excess of 50 pages just on 1 subject.
Thirdly, ENJOY YOUR SUMMER! Do that vacation NOW! Nursing school is so intense, and time consuming that you won't have time once the semester starts. You're gonna hit the ground running from day one. So RELAX, get what you need done for school now and take the rest of the summer off, academically speaking. There isn't much you can do to prepare for nursing school either, sure you can brush up on med term and pharm but trust me, that all is covered again, and again and again..........Go to camp success, get your CPR done, get your vaccines finished, submit all your forms and BREATHE.....Fall will be here before you know it.
Fourthly, EMBRACE YOUR PEERS! I am blessed; so far all of my clinical mates have been terrific. We all take care of each other and I KNOW that they are in my life forever! Your peers are a wealth of knowledge, use that knowledge to be a better student nurse.
Lastly, Have fun along the way, even if you get a "C"! You're gonna have days where the weight of the world is on your shoulders (homework, EXAMS, fellow peers, instructors, family, work, etc), but REMEMBER, this is YOUR JOURNEY through nursing school....make it a memory you cherish. Nursing school can be hard on the "ego" sometimes....the exams are HARD and you really do need to celebrate those "C's". NEVER take nursing school too personally, but always bring a personal touch to nursing.
Best of luck to each and every one of ya. See ya around soon! Congrats!

Yeah, you will be busy if you get called. Schduale for the CPR traning, do the urine test, pay all of the fee, buy the scrubs, buy the books, attend the orientation. I just hope you will get called ASAP!
Just call me Alex :)
