Anyone else applying to the USF MSN, the SF State ELM-A, and the Samuel Merritt ABSN for a Spring 2017 start date? I am in a mad rush trying to finish all my pre recs. I have Stats and Physiology this summer, then Sociology, Pharmacology, and Pathophysiology (all online) in the fall. Anyone else in the same boat??
The only reason you'd want a BSN and MSN is if you want to work with your BSN to get experience first in the department that you want to specialize in, then do the MSN to specialize in that unit. For example, in order to qualify for midwifery, you have to work as an RN in labor and delivery for Atleast 1 year.
Did your work colleague have trouble getting a job out of nursing school? I have just heard hospitals want that BSN and really do not like nurses with a masters but no experience. Not sure if that is true, just what I have been hearing. The reason I am considering it is bc the financing is way better than the ABSN (apparently can't get federal loans with a second bachelors).
She's a Patient Care Technician and is applying for the new grad program on the labor and delivery unit this fall. So the managers already know her, this way will be easier for her because she's already working on the unit she'll be applying to. But it is absolutely true that hospitals don't want to hire MSNs with no experience. But, with an MSN, you are still eligible to work as an RN on the floor(especially in a new grad program), get experience that way, then move up the clinical nurse ladder. The best way to get a job is through a new grad program If you don't have any prior nursing experience. If you work even an hour using your RN license, you will not be eligible for ANY new grad programs. This is true for both Stanford And UCSF.
ugh yeah i will probably just apply to USF and SF State for their entry level MSNs and then make a decision if i get accepted to either. unfortunately i would find out if i'm accepted to USF and State before the app for SMU is even due!! but i think the ABSN may be a better fit for me given my goals. Just not sure what is best!

I'm just don't like that you only get a MSN, and not a BSN plus an MSN like af State. My concern is that many hospitals are saying BSN required. If you have an MSN but no BSN, you don't meet that criteria. Seems like a big risk to spend $88k and not be able to satisfy this basic requirement, ya know?
