Applying to SF State ELM-A, USF, and Samuel Merritt ABSN for Spring 2017 Start

Published

Anyone else applying to the USF MSN, the SF State ELM-A, and the Samuel Merritt ABSN for a Spring 2017 start date? I am in a mad rush trying to finish all my pre recs. I have Stats and Physiology this summer, then Sociology, Pharmacology, and Pathophysiology (all online) in the fall. Anyone else in the same boat??

I applied for SMUs ABSN & ELMSN -FNP for the July 1st deadline in San Mateo. I'm taking pathophysiology and pharmacology this summer online and graduating this December with a degree in Molecular & Cell biology from Mills College.

Good luck!! Are you applying to the SF State ELM-A as well?

No. Is that for a specialty? What are your stats?

mine are:

Last 60 credits : 3.7 GPA

Science : 3.5

TEAS Overall: 89%

Math: 100%

Reading: 83%

Science: 91%

Language: 86%

I've worked at a behavioral and geriatric skilled nursing facility as a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) for 1 year, Stanford Hospital as CNA in float pool (emergency, ICU, orthopedics, med/surg, neurology, oncology, cardiac, psychiatry), and now I'm at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital in Labor and Delivery, Postpartum, Antepartum as a Patient Care Technician. I'm a volunteer in the ER at Washington Hospital and I'm a monthly child sponsor for World Vision.

BA Molecular/Cell Biology

I just looked at the ELM-A for SF STATE. it looks like a good idea for me to apply. I have everything except for the GRE, But since the deadline isn't till August, I have time. Have you taken the GRE?

oh cool. you should look at the SF State ELM-A too, you get a BSN and an MSN for less than the price of the samuel merritt ABSN. you can pick three tracks, CNS, Public Health, or Administration. You do need to take the GRE to apply. my stats are:

Science classes: 3.9, taking physio over summer

Last 60 units: about a 3.8

TEAS/GRE: haven't taken yet

Job: Attorney

Other: two volunteer positions in hospital

definitely don't think i have a chance at State but i figure it can't hurt to apply!

Not yet, taking it this weekend. Unfortunately not able to study, because this weekend was the only testing date that did not conflict with work or school! Sign up asap, they don't have as many testing dates as you would think!

i was also thinking about the USF entry level MSN, but i don't like the fact that after all that money and 2 years, you don't get a BSN! What are your thoughts on the USF MSN program?

Awesome!!! State is more likely to accept high GPAs! So you certainly have a shot.

Sounds good. I'm on it! Thanks for the idea. I've been sold on private schools so I didn't think about looking at states anymore since I really want to go to SMU. But you're right. Definitely worth the shot. They only look at the writing portion. Does that mean we don't have to study for the other sections?

I work with someone who just graduated from that same program. For me, if I'm going to get an MSN, I want to be a specialized nurse practitioner. (There's also nurse anesthetist and midwifery for other people's interests).

The MSN for nursing allows you to become a Clinical Nurse Leader (managerial/administrative/educator), or work on the floor as bedside.

It definitely would not be on my top two picks if I got into the other programs. Since I would rather have a specialty for my graduate degree. Although, in this point of time, it would certainly put you ahead of other candidates when it's time for interviews and new grad programs. A lot of nurses are going back for their masters to become updated since so many new grads have masters now.

I think the analytical writing score mentioned is a minimum to apply, but probably good to do as well as possible on all the sections. Unfortunately I am not going to score very high due to the timing but if I had a month I would definitely try to put in some study time before the test!
