Applying for Sacramento State ASBSN Fall 2009

U.S.A. California

Published

I just wanted to open up this thread to see if anyone else is applying for Sacramento State's ASBSN program (set to start in Fall 2009)? I'm currently waiting to see if I'm one of the lucky 20 who will start in the fall.

Apparently, the program lost its' funding this year so it will be combined with the generic 2 year program (which is still much cheaper than Samuel Merritt's tuition). I'd rather start in the summer like in previous years, but in this kind of economy, I guess it's still good that the program wasn't eliminated entirely.

I didn't have to wait very long either; I am also happy to report that I have been accepted for fall 2009. If you choose Sacramento State, I'll probably be your classmate. Let me know what solution you come with for your problem; I had a similar problem with the ABSN program for Samuel Merritt which asked for notification in late February (I decided that I didn't want to pay $50K in tuition; and banked all on Sac State).

Congratulations Calstudent. I have an application at Samuel Merritt for November entrance, but luckily will not have to attend. Like you, I think the tuition cost is outrageous. It would be one thing if new graduates were being hired in the high paying bay area, but this forum illustrates that is clearly not the case. About my problem: I am going to email the CSU and ask what the penalty is for backing out of a statement of intent. I really don't want to do that, but I can't see any other choice. I will also try to coax a decision out of the SFSU but I predict that will be like trying to squeeze water out of a rock.

I admire your courage to bank everything on Sacramento State.

I'm almost pathetically happy to say that I too just received an admittance letter for the CSUS ASBSN program. It took me two-and-a-half years to get all the pre-reqs finished (my earlier degree was in communications, so very little of the coursework applied), but I finally feel that it was all worthwhile.

I hope to see you all this fall!

Congratulations Mossback! I'm glad that you feel that all that work finally paid off; I feel the same way and am looking forward to hopefully starting a worthwhile and fulfilling career.

By the way, I was wondering if you were familiar with the area around Sacramento State. I've been there once for an informational session, but didn't have a chance to see the surrounding area. Would you be able to recommend any areas of Sacramento that are fairly convenient to campus for apartments (and are safe/ fairly affordable)? I'm willing to go a few miles out (I think the nursing program requires us to have a car for clinical sites), but I'd still like to be fairly close to campus for amenities like the library, supermarket (I think I saw a safeway nearby), etc.

Sacramento State is in a nice section of the city, as you probably noticed when you were there. There are a number of decent places to live within a few miles of the campus.

If you're interested in an apartment, you might want to check out some of the complexes along La Riviera Drive (just east of the campus) or in the Campus Commons area (immediately across the river from CSUS). If you're looking to rent a home, try the River Park subdivision (just head straight out the front entrance of the campus), or some of the homes in East Sac (go out the front entrance and take a left on J Street).

As far as nearby grocery shopping and other services are concerned, there is a Safeway on Howe Avenue in the Campus Commons area. The same shopping center includes a number of other small shops, including a couple of worthwhile restaurants. For more extensive shopping, there's a major mall located about three miles north of the campus.

Please let me know if I can provide any more information on Sacramento.

Has anyone received an email with the orientation website yet (the one that's supposed to come mid-June)? I'm really eager to know more about registering for classes and have received packets and mailings from Sac State admissions telling me to log on to MySacState to check my registration appointment.

Mossback, I've found a family friend who is letting me stay at their home in Carmichael near the intersection of Manzanita and Madison. Would you happen to know anything about the area and if the commute to Sac State from Carmichael is manageable? Thanks in advance!

Hey Calstudent,

I emailed someone at the school on Tuesday inquiring about the orientation website. My contact responded that it would be up in the next week. So I guess we should get an email by the end of next week-- the 26th or 27th.

Take it easy,

Jared

Thanks for the update Jared!

By the way, I see that you've decided to go with Sac State instead of SFSU. It looks like you were able to solve the problem that we posted about in March.

It turned out to be not much of a problem. SFSU had its starting date pushed back, presumably because of budget cuts. That delay combined with the extra year of that program made Sac State a much more desirable option.

There is more budget cuts coming.... 410 million they have no idea how this will effect the division of nursing. It is likley you class will be the very last second bachelors degree program.

Sorry for the bad news.

Graduate Nurse.... nursinguy.

The area is relatively nice, with a very suburban atmosphere. There is also quite a bit of commercial development along Madison Avenue, so there are plenty of shops and restaurants in the vicinity.

As far as travel time is concerned, it should take you about 25 minutes to get to Sac State during non-peak hours, and roughly 45 minutes during rush hour. It will probably be easiest to take surface streets. It's a fairly direct route, since Manzanita becomes Fair Oaks Boulevard, which in turn becomes J Street and goes right past CSUS. Be advised that parking at Sac State can be somewhat problematic unless you arrive on campus fairly early in the morning. You'll always be able to find a place to park, but arriving in the late morning or early afternoon may require a 10 or 15 minute walk to get to class.

See you in August!
