Applying to Nursing Program

Published

I am currently in the middle of getting my pre-reqs done. I am in Florida, and the school I am in is highly competitive with GPA and NET scores being the main criteria for getting in. There is no wait list. If you dont make it, you dont get in. Nursing is very important to me. I have always wanted to do it and nothing else. I am 43 and time is of the essence! I was a housewife for 26 years and now I just got divorced. So far, my GPA is 4.0 but as I am starting A&P next month I am scared I will get a B in that class. Just in case I dont make it in when I apply in May, is there a way one can apply to different colleges all over the state, or do you have to move there and attend that one school before you apply? Any suggestions?

Hey....congrats on going back to school, I'm 39 and am starting the program next month. I don't really have any advice as far as the other schools, moving etc., but did want to offer this; You sound an awful lot like me. I maintained a 4.0 while doing my pre-reqs. I got a low A on 1 of my final exams and cried to my instructor and he smacked some reality into me. He said an A is an A is an A and it didnt matter if it was a 92 or 97. He also said that I had better lighten up and face the reality that I may not maintain a 4.0 in nursing school. He said that I needed to be realistic in my expectations of myself and it is great to have the goal of a 4.0 but not to shoot myself down if I get a B.

Still trying to get my arms around that advice and its hard. You sound like you are anticipating a B and you haven't started your class yet. You are a great student and you CAN pull an A in AP. And if you don't? You will be fine, if you don't get into the program, you apply again and again until you do. But I have a feeling that even if you do pull a B, that will bring your gpa down to a 3.95? 3.87? still very very awesome!!!!

If you need any help in AP, please pm, I would be glad to help you. It was my fav. subject. So to another 4.0'r YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!!! think positive and you will get the A

I don't know what your home situation is like, (if you have kids still at home or whatnot) but if you have the flexibility to move to another location, you can apply to any school you want to and if you get accepted then you move. Kids apply to schools all the time and move when they are accepted. Many schools have special dorms for people who are not the average student and it might take some adjusting but it is not forever. I am the same way about grades, and about your age. Lighten up on yourself because we have enough stress on us and it is not good for us in our middle age anyway. Find something to lighten it (mine is dark choc.) and give yourself a pat on the back.

jeez dont worry. I mean i'm in nursing school now and it really depends on your study habits in college. You have to keep up with all the material and be honest with urself if you dont understand anything. I know ppl in the nursing school who have gpa's as low as 2.5 so dont worry about it. Each school has its own minimum requirements for gpa so as long as u stay above that you should be ok. dont worry. Just keep doing what ur doing. and i think that since ur not the "average" college student, you probably will be able to see the final out come before you and will work towards it... unlike some of us who take the 1st couple of exams so lightly...lol

good luck!

Thanks so much for the encouraging words! I have decided to stop stressing over the big picture and just concentrate on my next series of classes in August. Math and A&P I. That should keep me busy!:typing
