Applying for jobs....how soon?

Published

Hello All:

Does anyone out there have any suggestions regarding when it is best to begin applying for RN positions prior to graduation? I will be graduating in May 2010 with my BSN. This is a second career for me and I not sure what the typical practices are when job searching for RN positions. I have heard answers that varied from "start applying now (in February)" to "wait until you have your degree." Given the current job market, I would certainly appreciate any feedback!

Start now....With the tight job market its important to be networking and going to career fairs etc well in advance of graduation...

Pretty much now.

Specializes in LTC/Skilled Care/Rehab.

I agree that you should start now. I graduated in May 09 and havent' found a job yet. I started looking in April (when hospitals told me to start) but I wish I would have started sooner. Good luck!

I called a lot of places but almost every place wants to see your license prior to applying.

I am in Texas and I am scheduled to graduate in May (as long as I pass exit HESI), I know there are deadlines for graduate nurse applicants at some facilities.

Specializes in Pediatrics, Geriatrics, LTC.

No one would even talk to me without the license appearing online.

Specializes in Psychiatry.

YES!!!!

I'm also graduating in May with my BSN, and just sent off job applications last week. The college I attend is through a local hospital, and they offer new grads internship spots...only 80 slots for 150-some graduates.
