2023 Applications to UBC and UVic NP program

Updated:   Published

Hi all,

I've applied to both programs to start in September 2023, and wanting to commiserate with anyone else who is anxiously waiting to hear. Looking back at previous years I'm feeling a bit discouraged since the admissions average seemed to be higher than I had been told by colleagues. Anyhow, let me know if you also applied and when you hear back from schools! Wishing you all the best of luck.

Only the email last Friday to let me know that they weren't going to let me know for a couple weeks. Did you get that one?

No. I did not get that one too. Do you know how many full timers they are taking?

No I don't unfortunately.

Nope. Just that email mentioned before saying they will email in the next couple weeks.  I hope I can get an answer soon. I was accepted into TRU, but want to know if I got into UNBC before making my decision.  I have to accept TRU by April 15.

For UNBC it's through the UNBC email address. They're not sending out to private emails unless you set it up to forward. My UVic response went to my personal email. You could always email admissions as well.

Hi!

Is anybody in the same boat as me? I thought we couldn't log into the UNBC email unless we're already UNBC students.

I got an email shortly after I submitted my application/the deadline in December that said to set up the UNBC email and have it forwarded to my personal account if I wasn't going to be logging in.   And to set up multi-factor with.  You don't have access to things like paying fees/applying for housing/applying for awards, but if you got an email saying your application was complete etc they should have set you up with the email.

Thank you Rimlak and IslandNurse for your responses!

Anyone else going crazy waiting to hear from UNBC.  I have until April 15 to make my decision on TRU.  I'm very greatfull that I got in anywhere and will be very happy to go to TRU, but I just want all the information to make a choice.  I applied for part time at TRU and full time at UNBC. I have to consider the may vs September start; brand new program vs an established one.   I just want to know if I didn't get in so I can move forward.  I don't want to accept my TRU offer and then find out the next day I got in to UNBC.  Anyways.  Ugh. Why is UNBC so far behind?

I have a feeling that they are a very small department overwhelmed with applications.  Frustrating but I think you should know by the end of next week. Cutting it close.

Oh I know.  I imagine it's a super busy time.  I don't blame them it's just the timeline making me anxious.  I know I should just relax and be happy that I got in somewhere, but my brain likes to make a plan and I have little kids and a job situation I need to figure out LOL

I know the feeling!  It was torture before finding out! I applied with UNBC part times as well and haven't heard, I originally thought I wanted part time, but was lucky to get into UVic and I decided to go there. Good luck in whichever you end up doing!

If anyone else who didn't get accepted is still reading this thread (and/or for those who will read it for future applications) I did reach out to both TRU and UVIC. I asked them if they could comment on the greatest weakness of my application so that I could prioritize improvement. I apologize as I'm on my phone so my formatting won't be great and it won't let me directly attach screenshots.

I was a bit disappointed as TRU only responded with an extremely generic response:

"Thank you for your interest in TRU's MN-NP Program. This is a highly competitive program, and we received a large number of qualified applicants this intake.

Some ways that applicants can improve for our next intake are as follows:

Ensure that you have 2 outstanding references that speak to your ability as a leader and your practice abilities. Preference was given to applicants who had a refence that spoke to their abilities

Improve the letter of intent by thoroughly explaining your experience and goals for the future

Confirm all documents are submitted prior to the deadline

Preference was given to applicants within IH; however we do still accept those outside of IH"

UVIC however responded quite in depth. I have deleted sections that are specific to me and left the rest:

"For 2023 intake year for the Master of Nursing – Nurse Practitioner program, we had over 170 applications for 35 seats. Due to the overall admissions applicant pool GPA's, the GPA cut-off was above 7.23 out of 9.0 on the UVic scale and your admissions GPA was lower than this range... The admission process is very competitive. Even those with an excellent and relevant range of experiences are not always admitted.

... For now the post-degree NP Program only accepts the MN or MSN degree, not the public health master's etc...

Regarding work experience, the NP Program admissions competitiveness does favour those RN's with more than the minimum two years' of experience. For recent graduates, this may mean working a few more years. As to the range of experience, The NP Program looks for nurses who are able to work as independent clinicians in a family practice context, who have independent practice and assessment skills, in community settings or within interdisciplinary team contexts. Your application will include writing a comprehensive letter of intention to explain your background and 'make your case' as a future advanced practice nurse- NP. The program is competitive and everything that makes you stand out as a clinician will help. The more diverse your nursing experience is, the better students assimilate their new learning into the transition from RN to NP. Examples include: ER, Primary Care, Remote/Expanded scope, Medicine.

Also, the references are an important part of your application and should be submitted by qualified individuals, with a strong recommendation from each referee regarding your future potential for success in an academic program. We recommend first and foremost that you find the individual(s) who will give you the best possible references. For the employment reference it can be from a manager or director but Educator could fit too (arguably for either academic or employment). For references from a PCC, it may be a bit more limited.

If you do apply again to the UVic MN NP Program in a future year, you will be asked for the following: If you applied in a previous year, you must provide an in-depth letter showing actions taken to strengthen this new application over the previous one. The letter must be typed, double spaced, with standard margins, and no longer than 2-pages.

Please check in again if you do plan to apply in a future year, closer to the application date in case there are any changes to requirements.”

For ease of reference, on their website the application required a 6.0/9.0 GPA to apply (77%). On the UVIC scale this is a b+ or 3.33 on a 4.33 scale. Their cutoff GPA landed in between 3.67 and a 4.00, which is A- to A. I haven't attempted to figure out what precisely it is is on a 4.33 or percentage.

Anyone hear from unbc yet?
