Applicants to Portland/Salem Area Nursing Schools 2014

Published

I know that it's early, but I really wanted to get a jump on this. I have read the past two years' threads from start to finish and have seen the amazing support given by everyone involved. Considering how competitive it is for nursing school admission, it is extremely informative and heart-warming. I will be applying to all the schools in the Portland/Salem area to which I will qualify. This next year is going to be rough, but ever since I started on this journey I have loved every moment.

A little about me:

  • I am 33, married, no kids.
  • I live in Salem and have taken the bulk of my prerequisites at Chemeketa.
  • I have been working as a Dental Assistant for 2 years and feel that it is supremely unfair that many of the OCNE schools do not count dental assisting towards their "direct patient care" discretionary points. (I went to school for a year to become a dental assistant. I have dealt with medical emergencies, bodily fluids and have had my fingers in mouths on a daily basis! I'm grumbling, I know.)
  • I have a 4.0 GPA (so far) for all of the OCNE prerequisites (My single B in one of three Chemistry classes will haunt me when I apply to Linfield)
  • I am still one term away from finishing my prerequisites for the majority of the schools to which I plan on applying
  • I don't really think that I will be lucky enough to be accepted to any of the Portland-area community colleges due to my lack of necessary discretionary points (if any of you CURRENT students have found otherwise, I would be very interested to find out what you know!)
  • I will be applying anyway, because I know that I should at least make it onto a waiting list or two and as I have seen in previous threads - they do go through their waiting lists!
  • I sincerely hope that all my hard work will pay off and that I will be accepted SOMEWHERE

Again, I know this is early, but I look forward to seeing the responses from everyone!

Yay!!! I'm number 23 at mhcc so that makes me hopeful that the list is at least moving up!

@pogues60...you hear anything from CCC yet?!?! How'd orientation go @ PCC?

@Wilsosta...how'd your orientation go today?!?

FYI - anyone who is waiting to hear at PCC...they're up to # 21 on the waitlist! I got a call this morning and declined my spot...I was # 20.

Good luck to everyone still waiting to hear!! I hope you all get in wherever it is you want to go

Oh wow, so I need to learn to have less of a defeatist attitude. After realizing that the email I received from Clackamas did not include the information about the orientation, I assumed that I was so low on the list of alternates that it really didn't matter. I promptly resolved to stop checking my email at that point. Turns out it's a good thing that I am accepted at OHSU (Monmouth) because, on a whim, I decided to check my Clackamas email for the first time in awhile. It turns out that I received a follow up email inviting me to the mandatory orientation back on the 4th. I feel bad for missing this email, but I honestly didn't think that I had a chance! Thank goodness for OHSU or I might have missed an important opportunity!

Holy cow - I am so glad you're going to OHSU @efda2rn!

Thats so awesome @pogues60, congratulations! I didn't know you applied to Linfield or that it was your number one. I totally though you wanted to go to CCC! Either way, I'm so happy for you!

What's happening with everyone else out there? Any new waitlist hopefuls hear anything from any of the programs? I hope some of you who've been waiting have heard something!

I am number 4 on the wait lost as of last week for mhcc! I hope they get more people to choose other programs as this is my only successful acceptance!

@ Born4This

Yea, it was a total surprise to me. It was a shot in the dark, for they only except Mcminiville stuents for Fall term at Linfield usually and only if your lucky you get in off the wait list as an outsider. So happy! CCC was my first choice for community college. I hope you are enjoying your Summer!

Hello everyone. Congratulations to everyone who got into programs this year!

I'm in the 3 year BSN program at OHSU's Portland campus. I just finished my first year and am off enjoying summer break. I use my iPad more than any of my classmates. In fact if any of them read this post they would probably know who I am ;) I even take notes with a fancy stylus directly onto the pdf's or ppt's and study off of them for tests. I don't print off any of the many many files for us to read and study, only papers for clinical that I need to hand in or have on the fly for simulations. I do take paper notes on my own time because I do think that it helps me absorb the information better. I also got all of my text books as ebooks and read them on the iPad. During winter term, I did try the paper route to compare but went back to the iPad for spring term. If you want more information, please let me know.

Some folks had questions about working. I know that some of my classmates work on weekends or in the evenings a few days a week. I'm a CNA and I'll pick up shifts here and there on a Saturday and try not to schedule them when I have a heavy school week ahead. I have two school aged children so I don't work much to have some free time with them.

The medical insurance has been a bit of a financial headache for some at OHSU, especially anyone with Oregon Health Plan. I believe it's around $3500 for the year (you keep it during the summer).

Parking is expensive, but not impossible to find, especially back by the School of Nursing. It's the same price as city parking. A bunch carpool and split the cost.

If anyone has any questions about the first year of the the 3 year program at the PDX campus, feel free to ask.

Hello all,

Just thought I'd update anyone wait listed at PCC. I got the call yesterday and I was #60 on the wait list. (SO EXCITED!!!!!!) hopefully this is good news to some!! Good luck everyone!!;)
