Applicants to Portland/Salem Area Nursing Schools 2014

Published

I know that it's early, but I really wanted to get a jump on this. I have read the past two years' threads from start to finish and have seen the amazing support given by everyone involved. Considering how competitive it is for nursing school admission, it is extremely informative and heart-warming. I will be applying to all the schools in the Portland/Salem area to which I will qualify. This next year is going to be rough, but ever since I started on this journey I have loved every moment.

A little about me:

  • I am 33, married, no kids.
  • I live in Salem and have taken the bulk of my prerequisites at Chemeketa.
  • I have been working as a Dental Assistant for 2 years and feel that it is supremely unfair that many of the OCNE schools do not count dental assisting towards their "direct patient care" discretionary points. (I went to school for a year to become a dental assistant. I have dealt with medical emergencies, bodily fluids and have had my fingers in mouths on a daily basis! I'm grumbling, I know.)
  • I have a 4.0 GPA (so far) for all of the OCNE prerequisites (My single B in one of three Chemistry classes will haunt me when I apply to Linfield)
  • I am still one term away from finishing my prerequisites for the majority of the schools to which I plan on applying
  • I don't really think that I will be lucky enough to be accepted to any of the Portland-area community colleges due to my lack of necessary discretionary points (if any of you CURRENT students have found otherwise, I would be very interested to find out what you know!)
  • I will be applying anyway, because I know that I should at least make it onto a waiting list or two and as I have seen in previous threads - they do go through their waiting lists!
  • I sincerely hope that all my hard work will pay off and that I will be accepted SOMEWHERE

Again, I know this is early, but I look forward to seeing the responses from everyone!

Thanks so much @BRW85!! I can't believe it happened, and, I am just thrilled to be a part of the 2016 cohort. I wanted it so badly when I was sitting there at orientation. A gal I spoke with who's going to be a second year now (I think you, me, and the gentlemen you were siting with talked to her all at the same time!) told me not to lose hope because she got offered a spot a week after orientation...then I get offered a spot, a week after orientation! Can you believe that? So exciting :-)

The final shoe has dropped. Chemeketa accepted me too. I guess I was waiting to get that bit of love from the school that showed me that I can still be successful. I will probably be letting that spot go, however. . . .I am pretty sure I am going to OHSU.

Hello RASKL! Not sure if you will get this since it's a year later but, I am interested in your thoughts about Linfields's Nursing program. I hope to attend in the Spring of 2015 but not for the accelerated program. I got accepted into PCC's Nursing program for the Fall 2014 but Linfield has always been my top choice. However, I assume all the courses are the same, just one is more accelerated (less breaks). So at this point is sounds like you may already be graduated....Did you love it! Any info about the school, courses and clinical sites would be much appreciated.

Hey all! I'm a Linfield ABSN student that started in the spring this year. I would be more than happy to answer any questions you have about the school and/or the application process. I also took some prerequisites at Chemeketa, and I applied to the 3 year program at OHSU and the ABSN program at Linfield, and decided to go to Linfield! What type of discretionary points are you referring to? Are you applying as a first or second degree student? While grades are very important in getting into the program, I think the content of the insight resume and letters of reference are equally important. Good luck, and let me know if you have any other questions about Linfield!

I am going to OHSU. Reasons: Chemeketa classes all seem to start at 8am; I have kids that go to school in McMinnville--I would drive myself crazy trying to get to class. The OHSU Monmouth schedule is often later, and it is a shorter commute for me. I am also now a Ford Re-Start Scholar, and I have the ability to go for the BSN all at once, thanks to that.

I am very glad to be accepted by my school! I will always have a soft spot for Chemeketa. They do things right, and have an excellent program. (Except for making us all wait until mid June to find out if we have a life!:nailbiting:) Anyway, I am grateful for all my teachers and all my experiences at Chemeketa. Power to all you Chemeketa student nurses! You are great.

Any MHCC fall start nursing students out there?

Wilsosta-

YES! I am a fall start MHCC student! I have never posted on here before but I have read a bit of the thread. I have been waiting to see if anyone posted on here. excited to see someone on here I will go to school with!

Yay! I'm.excited for the orientation next week. I already registered for classes, did you?

Yea, I did too. I think it said we could on the 16th so I made sure to do it that day. Yes, I am excited to meet everyone from our cohort. I am pretty new to the area so I need to make some friends! haha.

I think we will all become good friends, I think all our classes will be together except one I think had 2 choices for it if I remember correctly. Can't wait to get started!

Well I just denied a spot at MHCC winter term start. I was alternate #15. So that opens up another spot to somebody else!!

I was just curious if any alternates for the fall 3yr BSN at OHSU have been called yet, does anyone know?
