Applicants to Portland/Salem Area Nursing Schools 2014

Published

I know that it's early, but I really wanted to get a jump on this. I have read the past two years' threads from start to finish and have seen the amazing support given by everyone involved. Considering how competitive it is for nursing school admission, it is extremely informative and heart-warming. I will be applying to all the schools in the Portland/Salem area to which I will qualify. This next year is going to be rough, but ever since I started on this journey I have loved every moment.

A little about me:

  • I am 33, married, no kids.
  • I live in Salem and have taken the bulk of my prerequisites at Chemeketa.
  • I have been working as a Dental Assistant for 2 years and feel that it is supremely unfair that many of the OCNE schools do not count dental assisting towards their "direct patient care" discretionary points. (I went to school for a year to become a dental assistant. I have dealt with medical emergencies, bodily fluids and have had my fingers in mouths on a daily basis! I'm grumbling, I know.)
  • I have a 4.0 GPA (so far) for all of the OCNE prerequisites (My single B in one of three Chemistry classes will haunt me when I apply to Linfield)
  • I am still one term away from finishing my prerequisites for the majority of the schools to which I plan on applying
  • I don't really think that I will be lucky enough to be accepted to any of the Portland-area community colleges due to my lack of necessary discretionary points (if any of you CURRENT students have found otherwise, I would be very interested to find out what you know!)
  • I will be applying anyway, because I know that I should at least make it onto a waiting list or two and as I have seen in previous threads - they do go through their waiting lists!
  • I sincerely hope that all my hard work will pay off and that I will be accepted SOMEWHERE

Again, I know this is early, but I look forward to seeing the responses from everyone!

The ladies that got into OHSU... Are you for sure going? Help me decide. I think of course the education there is one of the best, however, I will still have my bachelors there and will go there for my final year. I am trying to think of cost and accessibility. OHSU is far with really no parking.. Does anyone know tuition CCC vs OHSU? Is it dumb to put cost/ convenience over one of the top schools? Help!

alewis513-- That is my exact dilemma as well! I am torn btw CCC and OHSU. CCC is so close and convenient (like 5 min away close), while OHSU is one of the top 10 nursing schools in the US and since we are all finishing there with our BSN's anyway - does it matter where we do our first 2 years? I DON'T KNOW!!

I got into OHSU PDX as well!! woop woop sooooooo excited!

I got in to OHSU too!! Congratulations to everyone else who's been accepted.

Yay! I got accepted to OHSU-PDX!!

congrats to you:)

Wonderful news. Congrats!

Well, I think it's something to think hard about.

it sounds like a question of your final year really...it will only be online through any bridge program...I think unless you go for the Ashland program....correct me if I am wrong. I think the quality of education would be great at both schools. There will probably be different clinical opportunities, different facilities, and different instructors. I know that OHSU offers/requires medical insurance for students... I am weighing the two myself. I really am certain I will choose OHSU but I want to be positive it's the best option.

I have reached out to some RNs one who did the two year program with her one year at OHSU (she did not do distance learning last year-- they had it on campus) she said she is in so much debt even with community college for two years so she couldn't imagine the debt of all three years at OHSU. She also said she felt just as capable working along side nurses who went to only OHSU now that she works in L&D at OHSU. She also mentioned that parking costs even students everyday. So with all that in mind I think CCC will be my choice but plan to sleep on it for a couple nights.

Congrats to all accepted OHSU-PDX's 3 year BSN program! Anyone know the final cohort size?

Congrats to all who have been accepted to OHSU! I would definitely choose OHSU over the others . I think it would be nice to get your roots down early at OHSU and it may help for future jobs. It's bigger so there are more professionals to meet and get to know. Happy deciding!

I am 90% sure I will choose OHSU. I'm not sure about the cohort size. I should be getting a packet from them in the next week with more information. I'll let you guys know. I just got a brief e-mail informing me of acceptance. I can't believe it! It's seriously the best news ever.

Anyone else pretty sure they will accept the offer?
