Applicants to Portland/Salem Area Nursing Schools 2014

Published

I know that it's early, but I really wanted to get a jump on this. I have read the past two years' threads from start to finish and have seen the amazing support given by everyone involved. Considering how competitive it is for nursing school admission, it is extremely informative and heart-warming. I will be applying to all the schools in the Portland/Salem area to which I will qualify. This next year is going to be rough, but ever since I started on this journey I have loved every moment.

A little about me:

  • I am 33, married, no kids.
  • I live in Salem and have taken the bulk of my prerequisites at Chemeketa.
  • I have been working as a Dental Assistant for 2 years and feel that it is supremely unfair that many of the OCNE schools do not count dental assisting towards their "direct patient care" discretionary points. (I went to school for a year to become a dental assistant. I have dealt with medical emergencies, bodily fluids and have had my fingers in mouths on a daily basis! I'm grumbling, I know.)
  • I have a 4.0 GPA (so far) for all of the OCNE prerequisites (My single B in one of three Chemistry classes will haunt me when I apply to Linfield)
  • I am still one term away from finishing my prerequisites for the majority of the schools to which I plan on applying
  • I don't really think that I will be lucky enough to be accepted to any of the Portland-area community colleges due to my lack of necessary discretionary points (if any of you CURRENT students have found otherwise, I would be very interested to find out what you know!)
  • I will be applying anyway, because I know that I should at least make it onto a waiting list or two and as I have seen in previous threads - they do go through their waiting lists!
  • I sincerely hope that all my hard work will pay off and that I will be accepted SOMEWHERE

Again, I know this is early, but I look forward to seeing the responses from everyone!

I am not sure what the score cut off will be, they will not have that information until after may 12th, which is th ecut off date to contest scores. On another Chemeketa specific posts one of the posters said they were told there were 165 applicants that took the essay so that is down from previous years.

I think 356 is a solid score and I hope you get in,

I was fortunate enough to get 50/50 also on my essay and I scored all 360 overall so I am feeling pretty confident.

Cool!! Only 165 applicants is a lot lower than in other years. That's so good to hear. Good luck!

alewis513 - I applied to PDX OHSU as well

I also felt great about the staff at CCC, as well as MHCC. If I get into PDX OHSU though, it would be hard to turn down since it's one of the top 10 nursing schools in the nation. I'm trying not to think about it, but it's impossible. It sounds like we should hear from all of the schools by May 16th.

I just got an email from MHCC informing me I have been accepted Fall term!! I haven't heard from any of the other schools, but at least I know I've got somewhere to go!!!!!!!!

Awesome! Congrats! Did you take your prereqs at MHCC? How many students does MHCC take? I know PCC is 80 and CCC is 40... What is OHSU? I heard it may be higher this year?

I took my prereq's at PCC. MHCC has two start: Fall term takes 40 students and Winter takes 32.

Fall starts go: Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter terms. So no breaks.

Winter starts go: Winter Spring, Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer

Either way you go through one summer.

I'm not sure about OHSU PDX.......

Are you starting fall or winter? That is too exciting. Did you have your CNA already?

I got accepted for the Fall start. We don't get to choose. Yes, I am a CNA2 and work in a hospital already. I am still waiting to see if I get accepted at CCC or OHSU. At this point, PCC is out of the question for me even if I get accepted. It was my last choice. Based on the interviews, think I would be happy at MHCC or CCC (CCC is closer to my house).

I already work at oHSU, so would seriously consider OHSU above anywhere else, but the only problem is I wish we could have interviewed at OHSU. I felt like each of the 3 community colleges I interviewed/proctored essay'ed at (CCC, MHCC, PCC) had its own "feel" and gave me an idea about the philosophy of the nursing school. I wish we had the option to interview at OHSU to give us a feel for the nursing school. I went into each of my interviews with the idea that I was interviewing them just as much as they were interviewing me, so I wish we had that opportunity to talk to the faculty at OHSU in the same ways we did at the other interviews. I will definitely make an appt to talk to someone at OHSU if I get accepted there to help me make my decision.

Awesome! Congrats! Did you take your prereqs at MHCC? How many students does MHCC take? I know PCC is 80 and CCC is 40... What is OHSU? I heard it may be higher this year?

Typically, OHSU Ashland has the biggest cohort and we only have 38 spots this year.

Missjordie, I got MMR, HepB #2, Tdap (EVIL!!!), and Varicella. I blame them all.. . . :[

Congrats!!! I just got excepted to mhcc as well but I start in winter!!! :) so excited!! mhcc is my first choice so I'm so happy! :) I hope you guys all hear good news from OHSU!! And I don't know about ccc or pcc but I'm expecting them to send out their letters soon too!! Good luck all!!! :D
