Has anyone ever done this course. What is it like? What did you like or dislike about the course. Any input would be appreciated.

Many thanks,

Sarah

I've done it 3 times.............

it's a breeze, because kids don't "normally" have cardiac issues. It's mostly based on airway and cirulation r/t dehydration, sepsis etc. The only cardiac thing that gets touched on, is kids about 6 months or less where fossa ovalis??? is concerened. Actually after the hole between the atriums closes is the fossa ovalis, but I can't think of the pre-close name???

Help me with that name someone? :-)

I believe the name you are looking for is Foramen Ovale. :)

Is anyone aware of continuing education courses (pals&enpc)in the four corners area of the U.S.A.please E-Mail course offering to [email protected]. I am also interested in forensic science offerings.:rotfl:

You should be able to find both of these courses offered at your local trauma centers and sometimes even at local hospitals in your area. If you are interested in forensic science I would recommend checking to see if there are any SANE/SAFE courses being offered in your area. I am a SANE (sexual assault nurse examiner) and we are in the middle of certifying a new team of nurses, it is a very rewarding and exciting career!

I just took this course a few weeks ago. I found it a LOT easier than ACLS. Overall, I thought the course was good, I just dont like sitting in the classroom for 8 hours a day for 2 days :angryfire

Since I dont work that often in peds, I was not sure what to expect, and I was afraid that I would fail, but you really learn a lot about kids, and what path they take when they deteriorate, which is much different than an adult. They also spend some time about communicating with the family during and after a resuscitation attempt, which they didnt spend as much time on during ACLS. I hope this helps some, if you have any questions, I would be glad to help!

Thanks for the reply. Were you advised to just read the book prior to the course. No outline provided. I did the TNCC and read the book and the course was great. Mock situations and then we had a test which we had to get over 80%. Is this what I would expect with the APLS. Please advise. It is coming close. Many thanks, Sarah

Whew...APLS was sure stressful but informative. We were 5 RN's and the rest were ER MD's and pediatrician's from all over the world. Total of 32 participants. It was great but stressful. It is physician based not nursing based at all. For example, they would be reviewing a case and ask you the course of treatment (medications, labs, diagnostics) which we have a knowledge base of what the MD would or should order BUT isn't our realm of practice. I am a RN and don't have the authority or background to advise what course of antibiotics this pt. should be started on, etc...The rescucitation components were great. They had manequins that talked, blinked, breathed, blood return for IV's it was great. That is real hands on. There is a pre and post test and you must get over 80% to pass. The staff from Sick Kid's Hospital (Toronto, ON Canada) are top notch. It was great. So that was the 2 day APLS course. Recertify in 4 yrs. We all got our certificate for the APLS and PEM.

The Pediatric Emergency Conference was amazing and less stressful even though you were divided into groups for workout and break through scenarios. Awesome speakers too!

If you ever are interested in this by all means do it...

Foramen Ovale.

I would like to take APLS. From the book it looks like it is a nice compliment to PALS and en elaboration on ENPC. AS an instructor for both I think it would be a good addition to my repertoire.
