frankly i'm surprised to hear of a professional medical organisation taking a stand like this...but very pleasantly surprised!!

:balloons:

to me, it makes sense the apa endorses gay marriage; for what association/professional group would recognize and acknowledge the disdain & the bigotry spewed at the gay population.

and psychiatrists certainly would also empathize with the frequent despair and hopelessness that many gay people feel, as i feel confident that a good portion of their clientale are gay.

i applaud the apa and wish other groups would follow suit.

I am glad a major professional association such as the APA has endorsed gay marriage. It makes me feel like I will finally be seen as a whole human being.

Now if only I can find a facility that offers benefits for same-gender spouses. I go without health insurance because my facility 1) does not offer partner benefits 2) makes it far too expensive for a part-timer to afford insurance.

I'm just glad someone took the initiative to look at the issue from a long-term health viewpoint. It weighs heavily on a person to know that their partner's family can take everything away if that partner dies, or gets critcally ill, or becomes unable to make a decision for themselves. In my case, I need tons of legal documents to cover the basics that a marriage certificate would cover.

You need to move to Massachusetts.

Or just come to Canada (most provinces, watch out for the very cold ones though) ;-)

Good news. The APA has long acknowledged that homophobia is more harmful to a persons well being than actually being homosexual is.

UPMC in Pittsburgh does. I'm not sure how you guys feel about relocating. Dh works for them and the bennies are good. I think to add me it's only $5 more a month to his costs. Not too shabby.
