anyone worked at the Mayo Clinic Hospital?

Hi All,

I have an interview with the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Arizona next month. I would like to hear from anyone that has worked at the Mayo Clinic Hospital, the one on 5777 E. Mayo Blvd., in the operating room or on another floor/dept. What was your experience like? Were you treated with respected? How were the docs and other colleagues, nurses, aides, housekeepers, etc.? Was the management supportive overall? I would like to hear the pros & cons please. I am an experienced OR nurse who's looking to relocate to AZ. If you have any other advice of where to seek a good employer, pls state that too.

I'm in an accelerated BSN class being taught on-site and it appears to be a sweet place to work. I think it's been opened since 1999 so there aren't many that have worked there. The Mayo phillosophy is teamwork/cooperation so there shouldn't be many reports of problems between doctors/nurses. Supposedly they should be a magnate hospital in the next month or so.

You probably know the history of Mayo, but it isn't a churn it out type of hospital. The patients come first and they take whatever time is needed. They aren't there for profits. From what I've been told, the PT to nurse ratios are 3 or 4: 1 in the day and 4 to 5 : 1 in the night shift. The hospital doesn't cover alot of insurance company plans and so there are many out of pocket, upper SES type patients (some high expectations there), in addition to charity patients. There are nice benefits too, like an employee child care center on site.

I used to work with quite a few of their surgeons at Scottdale North, before Mayo actually opened their own hospital and only had a clinic. Quite impressed with them.

A friend of mine works at Mayo and Thunderbird as a Respiratory Therapist. She said Mayo is WAAAAYYYY better than Thunderbird. In fact, she's quitting Thunderbird and will work for Mayo exclusively.

Sounds like a good place to work.

Thank you ALL who responded to my question. I really do appreciate it. I will let you know how my interview went and if I liked my tour. I can't go on just from what I've heard, although all good, I do have to see and experience it for myself. I hope this will be my resting ground, as I don't like to move too often. I'm not a traveller. I've been an RN/OR in Canada for many years. I just wanted a warmer, much, much warmer climate. New Mexico, where I presently work and live, is NOT the place for me to work or live. It's just dead space, no one thrives here, has any ambition, goals, dreams. Sorry, but it's the truth. On my visit to AZ, I found it to be lively, modern, civilized, clean, fashionable, the women looked and dressed like women, etc., etc. It's like a mini Toronto, where I'm from originally, which is fine by me. I KNOW I will fit right in, even with the traffic congestion and all. I'm used to it from back home in Canada. God Bless!

Hi nurse rnfa,

I really like it. It's a brand new program, 16 months straight through. Mayo employees are instructors so the classes work around their "day job" schedules. That would be perfect for you. Maybe the downside would be it's not an RN to BSN type program yet. For the most part, it's after hours during the weekdays (5:00pm to 10:00pm) and then 8:00am to 4:00pm on weekends. Thurs and Fridays are off days. It's really an ASU BSN degree taught at a new campus, the Mayo Clinic Hospital. But we get some Mayo indoctrination thrown in for free. I think the next class begins in 16 months or so and will have about two weeks travel to Rochester, MN for some clinicals and Mayo indoctrination.
