I am a nursing student in PA, graduate in May....and was looking at moving out to California along the coast. Tired of all the snow!! My question is, i was looking at apartments and was shocked to see the average apartment costing 12-1600 dollars a month!!! Do they pay you enough to live?? and what kind of taxes do you have to pay. I'm just wondering if i will be able to support myself on a new grads salary???
i appreciate the help!

HOAG has a good reputation. It's non-union and the pay is high compared to the average (that's how they have managed to keep the union out). It's in a nice area. I have a few friends who work there on different floors. The only one who isn't happy is in the NICU.

I live in New Hampshire and I am also looking to relocate to California when I graduate in May. I spent this past summer at UCLA for an externship, and the price of living out there is crazy. Coming from the east coast, it's definately gonna be hard financially because the pay really isn't THAT much higher in Cali. But there are so many reasons to move out there, and if you can find a roommate or two, the price of living becomes much more bearable.
I am looking at Hoag and UCI, any recommendations for other Orange County hospitals that would be good for new grads?

UCI and Hoag are both great hospitals and two of the larger Hospitals in central Orange County. Hoag is non-profit private hospital. UCI is a University afflilated hospital that is a Level I trauma center. UCI is heavily unionized with dues being up to $80.00 a month, they have had strike threat last year that was canceled at the last minute. Contract negotiations with the California Nurses association could cause work stoppages at any time. Hoag is non-union. UCI charges its employees to park off site and shuttles them in. I hear parking is an additional $27.00 a month. UCI has had Magnet status for some time now. Hoag just recently achieved Magnet status
These are only two of many Hospitals in Orange County. There are two other trauma centers, Western Medical Center Santa Ana and Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo. Both are Level II trauma centers. Mission Hospital is non-profit and affiliated with The Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange and St. Joseph Hospital in the city of Orange and St Judes Hospital in Fullerton, California. Western Medical Center is on of four hospital owned by IHHI, it is a for profit system.
Most hospitals here offer new grad programs and a sign on bonuses. You are correct in saying that housing is not cheap. Finding a roomate to share costs will help.
I live and work in Orange County. I grew up here and love it. I work at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana. I think it is a great place to work with a lot of opportunities for most nursing specialties.
Today is Feb. 9th and I am sitting on my deck typing this in 85 degree weather and clear blue skies!

i am an ecu nurse at hoag hospital. i started last june in their new grad program. everything everyone has written so far about hoag is true. new grad pay starts at 29, but they also have great shift differentials. if you work the 7pm to 7am shift (which is what i work), the differential is $6.00/hr. they also have in-house registry shifts, which means you can pick up available extra days and make time and 3/4 for the entire shift. hoag also has great benefits and wonderful educational opportunities.
all that and a great view of the ocean.

What's the hourly rate for RN homecare nurses in Newport Beach? One of the ladies in church asked me to help her postop bilateral mastectomy and I don't know what to charge. I am a retired nurse with an active license and several degrees. Nurse92658
