Just was wondering if anyone else is in the same boat as I am in applying for the FALL 2010 nursing at nvcc. Did anyone received their acceptance letter yet? thanks

Hey All,

Am new to this site and also going back to school in Fall 2010 to take my pre-req for nursing program. Had a question about application process. According to the site we can't submit our checklist before all grades are in...now given that am taking two classes in spring 11. Now application deadline is May 27th mostly...does that not cut it short as far as sending out checklist and applying at same time. Since class end around May 9th....any help/advice will be great. Also, when's the best time to take the entrance exam for the program.

Didn't mention but school am referring to is NOVA.

It is cutting it a little close, but you should have enough time. This year they said you had to have your checklist in a week before the application deadline. They know a lot of people have to wait for spring grades to come in. Talk to your professors and let them know, and maybe they can post your grades a little earlier. If you are taking online classes, you also have the option of finishing early. As far as the entrance exam goes, I would take it as soon as you are ready. It's not too hard. Especially if you review the study guide. I believe you have to wait 30 days before you can retake a section if you don't get the required score, but I am not totally sure about that. I just would make sure you have it out of the way before finals.

A quick shout out to flames thanks for all the helpful advice.

no prob. if you PM me, I can give some private helpful tips!!

I went to the bookstore at MEC today and they said I had to buy the package there or I could not have the codes. I spoke to the manager, who said it was a nursing department decision and that other students had complained, but that it was out of the bookstore's control.

Yeah, I'm not messing around about those codes! So much more to deal with than chasing down books or codes. I ordered my books last week. Just waiting for financial aid to kick in... Now that we have our first reading assignments I wish I had my books now! :)

I did order NUR 150 and 135 books and a study guide for 111 through amazon (as well as some NCLEX rationale books). They are having a promotion where they give students free prime membership for a year (just need to sign up using your school email account). Prime lets you get free 2 day shipping. I am a amazon junky and already paid for prime, which they refunded to me once I signed up as a student.

If ya can, take NUR 150 in 1st semester,as the reading tends to be a bit less in the 1st semester for the core nursing classes. And if ur in the traditional program and if they offer any classes in the summer, take them!! makes things so much easier on urself!!

Hello All - I am new to this site and have found a lot of your posts helpful! I will be applying to the nursing program at the end of this coming spring semester (2011) and have a few questions about the program.

1) Can you submit applications to the traditional and hybrid online program, or can you only apply to one program at a time?

2) Have you heard anything about the first come first serve basis for reviewing applications? I am extremely nervous about how late I will be applying. I will have one last pre-req to take next spring (BIO 142), I won't be able to apply until grades are in...which does not leave me much time.

3) Besides BIO 142 I don't have many classes to take for the spring. Are there nursing courses anyone would recommend that would count towards the program?

4) I keep seeing references to the traditional or accelerated program. Is the accelerated program the same as the online hybrid program? Or is it different?

I would appreciate any information and advice!!!!

Thank you!

Hi Qtpiecal,

1) Not sure if this will change in the future, but you ARE allowed to apply to more than one nursing program at a time. If you are admitted to more than one program, the nursing department requests that you notify them of any offers you will not be accepting so that those "slots" can be offered to another student.

2) As of now, admission is to the NVCC nursing program is no longer on a first-come, first-served basis; it's entirely merit-based (with preference given to Virginia in-state students) and competitive, since only a certain number of slots are available each year. As long as you submit your application requirements before the deadline, you will be evaluated equally among all candidates.

3) Only admitted nursing students can take nursing courses. However, I highly recommend completing any or all nursing co-requisites before beginning the program. These include non-nursing courses like PSY 202, HLT 141, etc. Seriously--having any of these done beforehand will make your life so much easier.

4) That depends. Sometimes the nursing department offers an accelerated in-person nursing program, which includes a full-time summer semester. The other one is the (accelerated) online-hybrid program, which also includes a full-time summer semester. It may be that the poster is using the term interchangeably, or that he/she is specifically referencing one of the programs.

Hope this helps, and good luck with your application!

has anyone taking the teas test? i spoke to the counselor and he told me that the test includes math, and English- no science... is that true? please advise..

yeah, just math reading and comprehension. no science just a couple of calculations, know farenheit to celcius and reverse. good luck!
