Anyone use Microsoft OneNote during nursing school to take notes on?

I will be starting nursing school in about a month, so I recently purchased a laptop that came with Microsoft OneNote. I'm curious if any of you nursing students, or former nursing students are using or have used that program. Did you find it helpful? How did you utilize it? The gentleman who sold me the laptop had just graduated college and told me that he used it religiously during school...not in nursing though. Any insight, comments, suggestions?

I had just gotten it at the tail end of last semester, so I used it for my final paper in a research class I took. It was a little unweildy, kind of hard to use, but I think that's just because I wasn't used to it. It did keep all my journal articles and references handy. My husband got all excited when he installed it for me, showing me all the features and stuff. I'm excited to use it for my family case management class, to help keep everything organized :yeah:

Thanks for your reply! I thought it kind of looked a little cumbersome also, but I also think that it is because I haven't actually tried to use it yet. I have heard good things about it. I guess I just need to sit down and actually try to do some things on it and get the feel of it.

I was reading another thread where somebody had actually posted a snapshot picture of what their OneNote looked like. It was for a nursing student. It looked REALLY organized, which is right down my alley! With all of the horror stories that I've been told about how much time you DON'T have during nursing school, I'm just wondering if I'll actually have time to use it.

I have some experience with OneNote I find it very useful. Also another good review from a current nursing student can be found here: http://jennifervitti.com/2009/08/03/nursing-school-tidbits/ she gives some other useful suggestions as well.

Good luck and let us know what you think about it when and if you use it.

I love it and find it great for organizing my information which really helps with studying for exams etc. Once you get used to it it's actually VERY user friendly and easy to format through. The more I play with it the more I'm in love with it. Enjoy :)

I just added this to my computer...whew!!! Mine is the 2007 model. Is there a newer version?

i use onenote religiously in school and at home. yes, at first it seems a bit confusing, but after looking through the onenote guide and using the help menu when needed, it can be very useful for organizing notes. here are some of the reasons i love about onenote are:

1) how you can organize a notebook by each class with each week's notes separate but still easy to access. the search function is great for finding stuff.

2) how you can write notes anywhere on the page with a click of the mouse (it's not as linear and "structured" as word)

3) how you can import class powerpoints into onenote and take notes along side of the pp. you can also send onenote stuff to word.

4) you can also extract text from jpeg (if there's text in the image). so i can scan something from a textbook and convert it to text which saves me time from typing it all out. (although if the text is not crisp, it will make some errors).

5) you can easily copy screenshots into onenote for easy reference.

6) it automatically saves itself, so i don't have to click on save before exiting the program.

7) there is an audio recording function where you can record audio and take notes. i haven't tried this out yet; i just learned about this function, but it sounds great for when the instructor goes too fast you can go back and playback what was said.

anyway, i hope this helps.:)

JBGC4 2007 is the latest version, but 2010 should be coming out soon, so keep an eye out for it.

i love onenote, i've used it for two years of prereqs and my first year of nursing school so far.

as far as the above statement, not only can you record and take notes, but it synchronizes the audio recording to your notes.....so basically, it puts a play button the left of every note you write or type. for me, this means that when i go back and read my notes and wonder what the heck i meant when i wrote something, i can press the play button to the left of it and it will start my recording 5 seconds before i wrote/typed that sentence. it also means that if i want listen again to my prof lecture about a specific topic (ie a specific arrhythmia or a certain disease), i can go straight to that spot in the recording without having to scan the entire lecture recording. it's a wonderful feature that i use quite frequently.

as far as i'm concerned, onenote makes nursing school easier for me....by far.
