Anyone thinking about med-school?

One of the reasons I am glad I'm going to be an NP vs PA, is because I can work without a physician overseeing, I think that will make me more valuable in the long run.

When I started nursing school I knew I wanted to go to graduate school and people kept saying, 'just worry about getting thru nursing school first' ... 'that's a long ways off and you have time to worry about that later' and it's all true but I think it's great to have a goal in mind that you're excited about. So while it's nothing to stress about now, you can be excited about it and use that energy to help you thru school.

Also pertaining to the original question about going to med school, it was something I had considered for about a year before deciding to go to nursing school. Many of the classmates I've talked to said that they have always wanted nurses while nursing is something I would have said heck no to a few years ago but here I am and I love it. I can't say medical school doesn't cross my mind occasionally but nursing is the path I chose and I don't regret it for one minute.

If I were you, I would go and volunteer at a local hospital. Tell them you're taking your pre nursing school classes. A hospital here has a special program for prenursing students where they rotate the volunteers around the entire hospital in almost every dept so they can basically observe. That should give you some concept of what a nurse is and does and possibly help you with your decision.

Good luck :)

Thanks. I've volunteered over 200 hours at 3 different hospitals.. I start nursing school in the fall. I guess I'll just see where I am at after 2 years!

I have considered med-school before I actually started the nursing program. Then when I started, I realized the differences between what a doctor does and what the nurse does, even an advanced practice one. I think they are alot more patient centered instead of disease or patho centered then the doctors are.

Also, I found a great article today in the American Journal of Nursing that says the ANA is concidering making a doctorate the top level a clinical nurse can recieve instead of a Master's degree.

I think I will stay with nursing and just advance my education through the clinical ladder, perhaps become a Nurse Practitioner.

Why a lot recently?

No real dramatic reason. Just that I've had some conversations about what my professional dreams are with the man I've been dating, and he's been very encouraging to me to pursue it if it's what I want. Plus, after working for the past six weeks as an extern in OB, it's reaffirmed my belief that I'm meant to work in OB. And because I'm a bit of an overachiever, I'd like to go further than RN: either CNM, or perhaps an OB/Gyn.

Definitely! I have too many committments at this point in my life (like three little boys), but if I could take a time machine & go back to when I was in college the first around when I was young... I would definitely go for it!

When you look back, you'll realize how much time flies... so don't let the time involved worry you... you'll have even bigger committments and worries later on when you get done and start working and having a family, etc. anyway. Have fun whatever you path you pick & don't look back with regrets.
