Hello everyone.. I'm looking for others who are starting a Grad-Entry Nursing program this fall. I will be attending The Ohio State University and am nervous and EXCITED! Anyone here????? Let's talk!
Not everyone has a job yet, but I know some people are planning on relocating or really haven't started looking yet. There are lots of NP jobs out there, it's just a matter of finding one that fits what you want to do. For instance, I don't want to work in an inpatient facility/unit, so I've looked exclusively at health centers and private practices. I have an offer pending, but I still want to see what's out there. There are few jobs that explicitly say they'll hire a new grad, but the ones that only request a year or two experience are still open to considering one.
I hope this info helps. I think getting that first job is challenging, but once you have some experience it gets much easier.
Thanks ( bcgradnurse). I actually have another question for you. I m coming into the field after being out of school for years! I have a decent paying job in healthcare right now ( 75 K) but it doesnt seem to be a stable job for the future. THe program I will be attending is MGH / DE and it is VERY expensive and full time! I will have to owe back something like 150 K at the end due to cost of living etc! So I really want to know how much the pay is for new grads etc? Do you know the offers your friends are getting?? I am really torn about whether to get out of my career and go back to school, owing soo much at the end. I am in my forties right now. I dont know any new grads and am new to the field. The thought of being a nP really appeals to me but the loan amount I fear will take me a long time to repay if they dont make the incomes that I thought... It would be helpful if I knew what they are truley being offered in terms of salary...thanks so much again!
I was in the exact same prosition as you. Becoming an NP is a mid-career change (or a mid life crisis!) for me, and it was difficult to give up a relatively well paying career for a whole bunch of loans. To answer your question, my graduating class has had offers ranging from low 70s to 90k per year. I'm currently waiting to hear on a great position that only pays in the mid 70s, but has the added perk of 20k per year in loan forgiveness, cause it's in an underserved area in MA. My other suggestion would be to look at Air Force nursing (if you are under 45). As far as I know, they are the only branch of the military that will pay for direct entry NP programs. One of my close friends went this route and will be going to SC to take care of Air Force members and their families. They require a 3 year commitment after graduation. Personally, I would have considered that route if not for my age and family obligations. And as I keep telling myself...it's only money!!
I think, like in any profession, the first couple of years are rewarding more for gaining experience than making financial gains. After that, I think it's easier to ask for and get the money you want and deserve.
Let me know if there's anything else I can help you with.
Thanks sooooo much! I am sure I will have more questions as time progresses but none right now:) I still havent decided if I am going to commit to the program or not! So much to think about!! And especially at this age!! ( Yes.. I agree..mid life crisis:bugeyes:) Btw is their a contact email I can use if I have any other questions? Or do I just post it on this thread? You have been so helpful to me. THanks?
