Did anyone go to shadyside with all the pre-req's completed? If so, could you share your typical schedule during the week? I am planning on working while going to school and I was wondering how many hours I would be able to work during the school week. Thanks!!
Hey, I started at Shadyside with all of my pre-req's done, the only college courses I needed were Logic and Diversity. My schedule was alot lighter than my classmates for the first two semesters. The first semester you'll probably be in class around 12 hrs per week (Two 4 hr lectures (100 and 101) and a lab) You will not have any clinical or lab requirements this semester.
The second semester you'll be in school a little more, probably closer to twenty hrs a week now. You'll have around 4 hrs a week of Fundaments lecture, 3 hrs Pharm lecture, a 2 hr pharm lab that you can schedule whenever, 4 hrs clinical on the floor a week, and 4 hrs in skills lab. This is the semester you'll be glad to have your pre-req's done. On top of those two classes, most students take A&P2 as well as nutrition. That entire load sounds like torture.
By the third semester, your load will be the same as that of your classmates. You'll have approximately 2 4hr periods of lecture a week, approximately 20 hrs of clinical a week (4 hrs of pre-planning followed by 2 8hr days). If you did not take logic, you would probably take it now as a 4 hr a week lecture.
You can probably work full-time in the first semester, and, maybe in the second. After that, I would think about cutting back hrs. I worked full-time through most of Shadyside, and it wasn't always easy. It can be done, plenty of students did it. If you attempt it, try to stay on top of things and be self-disciplined.
Does anyone know if admission is on a rolling basis or do they wait to receive all of the PSB scores for applicants before deciding on admissions? I'm applying for the Spring class and the most convenient testing date isn't till the middle of November but I could make it happen in October if it would make a difference for admission.
Thanks for the help in advance.
It is on a rolling admission, although they wait till it is closer to the start of classes to start admitting people. Then, they continue to admit until the deadline. In my example, I took the PSB in December, and then heard in May that I was accepted. Friends of mine in class didn't even test till June and didn't know until the beginning of August. Keep in mind that this was in 2007, so things may have changed. Good luck with your test!
Hi there! I posted this in a separate thread, but I thought it might get more replys here. Anyone with any info? Thanks!
I am a Shadyside school of nursing hopefull for the March 2009 start. I was wondering if anyone could give me any information about the program schedule? I have found the course schedule on-line at the Shadyside site, but I was thinking more of potential breaks or holidays during the year? Do you get any time off during the summer? If you have all your pre-reqs done, I understand you may have a day or 2 of during the week for the 1st few semesters, and then after that it is everyday?

Hi, I just graduated from Shadyside. This is how breaks were when I was there. School semesters go year round, including a full summer load. You get 4 weeks off a year, two weeks for Christmas, one week in the summer (usually early August), and a week in the spring. Other than that, you'll get a day off here and there for holidays (ie thanksgiving), but they tend to not take off alot of days.
I had all of my pre'req's completed when I went. For the first two semesters I had classs 3 days a week (I think it was 2 1/2 days and 1 8hr day). After I started the 200's, I was pulling a full everyday schedule like my classmates. Which went something like this
Mon 8-12 nursing lecture
Tues 10-2, or whatever 4 hr timeslot your instructor your instructor chooses
Wed 6:45-3 clinical
Thurs 6:45-3 clinical
Fri 8-12 nursing lecture
If you haven't had logic or diversity yet, those will be offered on Mon OR Fri afternoons from 1-4.
Hope you enjoy Shadyside as much as I did.
Hello All
I'm new to the site and I'm new to the nursing field. I'm attending the open house tomorrow @ Shadyside and I'm excited about my future opportunities. I never thought I would consider nursing and studying for the PSB and reading all these posts makes me feel somewhat comfortable. So I ask all of you am I making the right decision?

Well, it was the right decision for me. I guess you'll have to decide for yourself. Shadyside's a good school and I loved the experience. Hope you enjoy the open house.

I agree, call and talk to the school. They are very flexible. I actually took the test privately, because of scheduling conflicts.
