Anyone other school like this??!!!!

so i am ready to pull my hair out. i'm working on my icu care plan...my last one before graduation. it's ridiculous though! i keep hearing other students with these 1-5 page care plans that they just tape to a posterboard. mine is 67 pages right now and i still have a lot left to do. my instructor says the avg icu care plan is 80-100 pages. and i am in an adn program!!!!!! i am not complaining about having to know the stuff..i know it but these things are so repetitive and ridiculous. just wondering if any one else has these monstorous care plans to do as well!!!!!!:smilecoffeeilovecof :confused: :crying2:

Yep. Haven't done my ICU one yet, that one's still coming up, but even med-surg ones would be around 25-30 pages. Hard to imagine that much info could even be written, LOL. Some of the stuff that we do is a bit unnecessary, I think, but then the faculty hasn't asked my opinion yet . . .

Don't worry, you'll never do another care plan after you get out of nursing school.

hang in there!! i'm only in my second semester, so am jealous you're so far!! on the other hand, i have yet to hear that we're doing great big long care plans....perhaps the upperclasspeople aren't sharing that bit of wisdom yet -- ugh!!

Ugh that sounds horrible!

We haven't had to do a careplan since Fundamentals. Instead we write ridicuously long " journal" articles. But, still, even at that it's no 80-100 page paper!

I remember those careplans. I do NOT miss them at all. Mine averaged between 40-70 pages each and every time. By the time I got done though it was alot of copy and paste, and fill in the blank - because I had done so many similar care plans that it was repetitive. Hang in there though, as another poster said, you will never do another one once your out of school. Now the care plans are fill in the blank or check mark ;)

Are you kidding? I'm in a BSN program and we write careplans on every patient we have, but they are five-six pages max and that's filling in the blanks with our assessments and nursing diagnoses.

WTH are you writing that takes up 80-100 pages?

All I can say is I am so sorry.

I had a rewarding conversation with my current clinical instructor about careplans and concept maps. She actually will let us use the Ackley online careplan generator if we modify it so it only contains information that pertains to our patient, if we add our own S/S, and include the treatment plan.

As for concept maps, she agreed with my point that if you have 200 words on your sheet, it is no longer an effective concept maps. Concept maps, by definition, are to convey a concept. They are not supposed to contain every single detail that exists about the patient's condition.

Sorry that your supervisor thinks a 100 page careplan is an effective use of your time.

i agree with you 10000% josh. it is a complete waste of time and it's all repetitve bs. it's not just my instructor it's the way the entire program is designed. they think they're preparing us to "see the big picture" and we'll be more prepared than other schools after graduation.

all i can say is when i am scrolling back and forth over all these pages hunting for evidence and lab results etc etc all its doing is making me feel more disorganized than ever and preparing me to be exhausted and very crabby in clinical tomorrow morning!!!!

i wonder if i should pose this question in an instructor's forum to see if any of them can give some good rationales as to how this could ever be an effective teaching tool!

ok time to stop procrastinating....time to finish this!!!!
