What does ORMC stand for? Anyone knows the pay scale and how long is the contract you have to sign for? Aslo when you said is faith based, do you mean as a christian hospital?

ORMC = Orlando Regional Medical Center, it is a part of the Orlando Health system.

It is not a faith based institution.

Florida Hospitals are faith based, and are based in Seventh Day Adventist principles, so yes Christian. Their mission is "extending the healing ministry of Christ."

Some people have a problem with this, others do not, but it is something to consider.

I read somewhere, that when it is faith based, they tend to treat nurses better. Is this true?

I ask, because, I may have to consider a move, do not want to make it...but either that or get a job doing something else. Not sure how inexpensive the rent is up there, I cannot sell my place, so I will be stuck with two places until I know for sure I will like the job. Cannot remember which hospital in Orlando I was told to stay away from.

To answer the last two posts. I can't imagaine anyone having a problem with an institution that wants to extend the healing ministry of Christ. Unless of course they hate Christianity or Christians. In that case they are haters and that is their problem. As far as treating RNs better because they are faith-based I haven't found that true.

Fl. Hospital like most hospitals (all) are a business first. And first and fore most is the almight budget. Nurses are overworked, overwhelmed, and pulled in way too many directions. They are pulled from the patient and family side, the doctors, constant phone calls from all ancilary areas. They are now expected to do respiratory treatments, transport all patient's on monitors to and from tests and procedure, and now the hourly rounding. I have no problem with faith-based institutions but I do have problems w/hypocricy. Safety and employee satisfaction, and health are definitely second to the budget.

I have worked at Florida Hospital before in a different capacity, I did not mind the faith based, as I myself am Christian. Some departments held prayer meetings at the beginning of the shift that were optional to the staff, but for me I really enjoyed it.

I agree faith-based does not mean they treat their employees better, it's still a cut-throat world out there, and if someone has their sights set on getting rid of you, they will. I notice there were a lot of cliques within the facility and managers would fire and hire based on other employee/staff recommendations, without actually discussing it with the new hire or determining how this person will perform in the role, in other words, there was no evaluation.

I have seen SEVERAL good nurses, with numerous years of experience get treated like crap and even fired because someone else wanted their position (charge nurse, specialty, etc) or because they had a friend they wanted to work with instead.

That being said, it has nothing to do with being faith-based, it has to do with lousy people, and that's everywhere you go, no getting out of it, sorry.

As for rent, it depends on the quality of life you want to lead. The economy has hit hard some places in central Florida, others, not so much. Downtown Orlando rentals are still roughly $1200 for a decent, safe place. There are places in Conway or by the airport off Lee Vista that are decent, but very hustle and bustle and the amenities are average.

It just depends on what facility you work at, how far you are willing to drive to work, and what lifestyle you are comfortable living.

Thank you for the replies. Those facilities appear to be ones that have internships, hence, the query. As for a place to live, a studio would be fine, as long as it is in a safe area and not too far. I would not be selling my place anytime soon here in South Florida. I just want to consider all bases. I have yet to reach the sentiment, that pursuing nursing was not the wisest choice at my age -- but I really wanted to become a nurse and now that I have achieved it, I find job shortages, and the lack of respect in our profession; worse yet, from our own. I am optimistic...for now.

Hey just figured I post here.

Are there any ICU Rns here that wouldnt mind a nursing student shadowing them a couple times?

I'm trying to gain some more shadowing hours outside of my clinicals from nursing schools. Just trying to become real competitive for when I apply to jobs and apply to CRNA schools. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance
