Anyone in the MSN nurse educator program???

Published

Hi,

I was just wondering if someone could tell me about the MSN nurse educator program at Excelsior---positives, drawbacks, amount of time invested per day/week and how the testing works! I would be so grateful!!!

Thank you,

I've completed three of the 11 courses I need for my MSN (education) with EC. Have you done any online coursework before? It's pretty typical -- the classes require your participation in online discussions with other students, and there are weekly reading assignments. Most classes have a few papers that you have to write, some in collaboration with other students in an assigned group. Overall I find it very doable, even with a crazy work schedule and other commitments. There aren't really any tests at this level -- my last class was all papers and discussions for our grades. So far I'm maintaining a 4.0 GPA. :D

I have not done an online class before but I am familiar with how they run. Thank you for the information-- and congrats on the 4.0. So I am assuming you like their MSN program?

Yeah, I like it. The Army is paying my tuition and I get great tuition rates as an active duty soldier, so that's an added bonus. My professors have been fabulous, for the most part. The first guy was a bit less than engaged, but still not bad. I love interacting with nurses from all over the country, and with all kinds of backgrounds. Makes for a very interesting class!

Great, I was a little skeptical but I am now exciting, thanks! And yes, the military rates are great! Does your GI Bill pay all of your tuition? Oh one other thing--- where do you get your books from?

I'm just using the regular tuition reimbursement -- $4500 per year. I usually buy my books on Amazon.com or Half.com -- have found some great deals there, and have sold a few books back to Amazon in exchange for gift cards that I turn around and use for books for the next class. The only book I've purchased from the EC bookstore is their guide to graduate level writing, only because it wasn't available anywhere else.

Wonderful, thank you again for all the information!!!

I am also looking into the program. How long are the classes? The standard 8-16 weeks? How long is the program? 2 years?

The classes are 15 weeks, with the exception of two of them that are 8 weeks. There is also a grad-level elective that can be an 8-week or 15-week course. The length of the program will depend on how many classes you take at a time. I started in September 2011, and by the time I finish the 15-week courses I'm starting today (taking two at a time for the first time), I'll be about halfway done, so two years seems reasonable.

Thanks so much for the info. Very helpful.
