Hey this post is for all us taking micro and/or physiology this spring.
As for me, I'm taking both.
Anyone else?
I heard its part conceptual part memorizing.
I agree. My micro teacher always gave us study guides for our 3 unit exams when we started each unit instead of right before the exam, so we could study for the exam as we went through the unit instead of cramming right before the unit test. While many of my classmates would just answer the questions on the study guides and memorize what they wrote, I would make sure to understand the concept behind each study guide question before moving on and answering the next. For example, a study guide question/topic would say "Know the characteristics of the DNA molecule." My other classmates would memorize things like the complementary base pairs, know that it has a double helix structure, deoxyribose instead of ribose carbohydrate molecule, etc. I would not only memorize that, but also try to understand HOW the double helix structure forms because of how the molecules bond to each other. It definitely paid off because the question on the test relating to that question was a picture of a DNA molecule that had an arrow pointing to a nucleotide base asking us to name it. It was more work, but I approached every study guide question that way. I ended up getting the highest grade for every micro exam we took and got an A in the class with 99.2% of all possible points :redbeathe Now if only I did that well in every class...
I'm taking Micro & A/P 1 this semester. I just had my first A&P exam last night, and I got a 98% on it. I have my first lab practical tonight in Micro, as well as two lecture exams next week in Micro as well. I feel confident I'll do well in that class, but I find Micro to definitely be the more challenging of the two.
BeachBedhead, you said that you're a science person so I'll think you'll be fine. You did well in biology so you already have a solid foundation to build on.
I'm taking micro this semester and even after missing a week of lecture/lab when my son was hospitalized with flu complications, I got a B+ on the first exam. I have 3 other classes this semester, including pathophysiology. It's not bad.

I'm sure its doable
FLASHCARDS. I also take my own notes from the book before lecture, then I take seperate notes during lecture, and go through them to see what my professor thinks is important. I make flashcards for EVREYTHING that I'm not comfortable with, even if my professor didn't cover it in class, but pay special attention to what she did cover. That way, there won't be any surprises for me on the exam.
I'm sitting waiting for micro class to start right now lol. I too am taking the lab for it and A&P 2 class and lab this semester along with nutrition and human growth and development. Micro is pretty good so far.. Then again it's the micro directed for medical professionals so it's more focused. Good luck to everyone :) study study lol
P.s. Somewhere on this thread I saw organic chem mentioned... Took that last semester.. If you can do organic I think you could withstand anything lol that class was a beast couldn't even imagine taking it this semester

I just had my first week of micro and phys.
Micro doesnt sound bad, looks like the experiments are fun. my micro teacher gives us alot of help, she posts up all notes on power points, outlines them for us to fill in then has a study guide after each chapter. I mean there is no reason, I should fail unless I absolutely do NOTHING.
Phys was cool, seems like its just all knowing functions. duh, structure=function. my teacher for phys i had for anatomy. i know his style and how he teaches. hes the type of teacher who gives you the grade as you put the effort in. a-effort = a-grade lol
if we can keep this post alive we can maybe uses this to ask each other questions and update on how we are all doing. we are going through this together.

Sounds good :) You're right we are all in this together and encouragement is a very good motivational force to study lol :) What are you studying right now in phys?

Both physio and micro. I got lucky that they are not offered all on one day. Micro is m &w while physio is t&th
Did physio yesterday, all review. We are starting on neurophysiology next week. Anyone know how it is so far?

Hey, Im also taking A&P2 and micro together at the same time. Its tough, but so far so good. I got a 98 on my first micro exam and 94 on my A&P2's first exam. Its def accomplishable.
Micro is interesting, your learning about bacteria and the immune system (you'll learn that in AP too) so it makes sense.
You just have to use your time very wisely and study, study study.. Good luck
