I am a acute nurse and I also do same day surgery. I have also done c-sections in surgery for the last couple of years. Sometimes I have to be second nurse for lady partsl deliveries.

Specializes in Mother-Baby, Rehab, Hospice, Memory Care.

In mother-baby we did everything the RNs did with the exception of: taking pts on mag or getting blood, antepartums, and we had only a selective group of meds we could do IVP, so no narcotics IVP or setting up PCAs which is actually was not needed all that often. LPNs did intial assessments on pts transferring from L&D and OR, but had to have an RN sign our charts each shift that the care and assessment was reviewed with us (per JCAHO policy). Things may be different for you depending on your state's nurse practice act and hospital policies. At my hospital there wasn't much of a distinction between RN and LPN when caring for normal postpartum moms and babies. Good Luck with your new job, I love OB and miss it!
