Anyone live in the N. Denver suburbs, or familiar with them?

Specifically Westminster and/or Arvada?

As I mentioned in another thread, we are going to be relocating to CO from AZ in about 8 weeks. Our plan is to rent for at least a year or two, save up a bunch of money, then buy a house. My husband lived in Ft. Collins for ten years, so he's only really familiar with that area. We don't want to live in Denver proper, and we want to stay on the north side of town because all of our friends and family live north of Denver (Boulder, Loveland, Ft. Collins). But we still want to be close to Denver because that's where my XH lives (visitation with older kids), and I'm going to try to do travel nursing for the first couple years, and need to live close to as many hospitals as possible.

Anyway, that's my longwinded backstory - we've narrowed our search to the Arvada/Westminster area, but neither of us is very familiar with the area. We'll most likely be renting a home sight-unseen, which is a little scary. Hard to know what are good neighborhoods, and what are not.

We want to avoid communities where all the houses are new and look exactly alike and there are HOAs. We'd prefer an older neighborhood, blue collar, where you might see lots of kids on bicycles. We'll be renting a single family home, no apartments (need a backyard for dog and toddler!) Ethnic makeup of the neighborhood is not particularly important to us.

Anyone have any suggestions? Or alternately, anyone really familiar with the neighborhoods, wherein I could PM you with addresses and you can give me an idea of what the area is like? Any areas that we should definitely avoid, due to it being rough or lots of crime?

I live in the Arvada area and am also very familar with Westminster. PM me with the areas or addresses that you are looking at and I will be more than happy to give you my opinion.

Thanks for getting back to me! We did end up renting a place in Westminster, a few blocks off Federal Blvd and 92nd. My ex-husband looked at it for us and said the neighborhood seemed nice, so hopefully we'll like it.

Welcome to CO!

Thanks! I've been here over a year now. :) We LOVE the neighborhood we rented in, and hope to buy a home in the same neighborhood next year.

Oh wow Klone you're not far away from me at all. I go do a monthly trip over at Costco since FoCo hasn't got one yet.

Hey, I'm going to Costco tomorrow for dog food and diapers! We could meet for pizza and a $.99 churro. :)

Fort Collins (or old town Longmont) is still our "lottery" dream neighborhood, though. I'd LOVE to live on Mountain Ave. We try to spend a night in Ft. Collins once every couple months, and we always try to stay at the Armstrong (have you ever been there? It's GORGEOUS and very inexpensive). We were just there for the weekend during Taste of Ft. Collins, and we plan on spending the weekend in August for New West Fest. We should make plans to meet!

I would definitely be game to meet. I can't tomorrow, kids have dental appointments in Greeley and I work tomorrow night. I do need to get Costco by the 9th before their store coupons expire. Like 9 of the things I need are in the coupon book. I have never heard of the Armstrong, I will check it out. We try to do date night often and we are do for one. We went to Estes last time.

But I would be open to meet :D

hee, hee, you've been here longer than me! I gotta start reading the dates on the original post. I like it here too...food's really good, I love mexican food!

Love italian food!....Denver has some good spots. I also just found Chatfield Dam's off leash dog walking area, and the bike trails wow! I can't wait to really get into the mountains and go hiking. (Have the perfect dog for this, always up for an adventure. I'm sorry I missed the ski season, but that'll roll around again.

I finally got a job and I'll be on fri-sat-sun and a 4 hour check in mon am, but the rest of the week is mine all mine! YAY!
