When I was in my Nursing Fundamentals class today, we were learning about different study techniques to help us through school. Towards the end of class one of the students mentioned he had heard about studying while listening to classical music. It is supposed to help retain the information better. Has anyone heard of this, or tried it? I started to do this today. I am no spring chicken, I am 45 and need all the help I can get to help retain. Ha ha! Any suggestions? Not only that but one of the professors told us during orientation she tells her students to read their chapters a minimum of 5 times.

I also heard classical music helps. I start school in 14 days at this point I am willing to try anything. Reading the chapter 5 times is a bit much you will definitely fall behind. I was told in this bootcamp class for nursuing students to read the chapter once then outline the chapter and make flashcards if that works for you and then read it again one more time just incase you missed something. And study the flashcards from time to time to make the info stick.

I read the chapter and I also do an outline. I started to highlight in my books while I was reading but they say don't so it like that. I am now highlighting in the book what the professor talks about. Yes I guess I need to do the flash cards especially for terminology too. At helped me in MA school many moons ago, lol! Thanks for the tip a lLady Leo and best of luck to you. Today was my fourth day in class and we went over the chemistry chapter yesterday in class. Today everyone had this tired crazy look on thir face. Not an easy chapter!!

I did self help music...mostly concentration, memory, and taking tests. Invaluable!!!! I now find I utilize classical and new-age music when I study. I still listen to the test taking (LOL). The flashcards are a great tool for rote memory stuff...there are several flashcard programs on line that deal with nursing...some have different ways of presenting the same info so it does not become boring plus you find the best way to recall.

Not classical but I listen to music. Ha my instructor was laughing at me last year because I was studying while the other half of our group was in lab, she kept talking to me and I was in my own little world of music blaring. It worked though 93% on that exam.

I may or may not read the entire chapter. I read what I feel is important, highlight when the instructors are talking, make flashcards on quizlet and do all my homework assignments alone(alone because I feel it makes me learn the material better). My first semester is done and I am doing well, my plan is to keep doing the same things.

I started doing the flash cards this morning, helps tremendously! I also outline the chapter when I read, and I only highlight in my book, whatever the professor is going over. That was a tip from nursing fundamentals on studying. I think I listen to the classical because if I were to listen to my music with words I think it would take me off task! Lol. I like all kinds of music and I am finding that the classical relaxes me too. My oldest son has been playing viola since 5th grade, he is a sophomore in high school now and still plays, and I love to hear him play so I think it helps me listening to it too! Ha ha!

What is "self help music".

I listen to EDM, sometimes its distracting with vocals. I would randomly sing for a few seconds then get back to work (trying to enjoy myself while reading) . It all depends on the person!

When I read the book, I create an outline of what is important.

Teacher then gives us an idea of what will be on the test, I search up all the terms

Then the day before the test I reread the chapter to see if I miss anything.

I listen to "nature radio" on pandora. It helps a lot with studying and focusing.

I read, highlight, outline, flash cards then put my notes in my computer then I print them and put them in a binder. I keep it organized which makes it really easy to study. I know it sounds repetitive but it works for me.
