Anyone know of any Boston-area EDs that hire new grads?

Published

I was just wondering if anyone knew which EDs in the Boston area hires new grads. I know BWH has a program, but otherwise I don't know. Just trying to figure out where to bother applying to...

Mount Auburn has a program, but I'm pretty sure you need to have some Med-Surge experience. I don't know what your background is, so it might not hurt. Though one starts in Feb and I don't know when the next is.

I would be curious about this too because any hospital that hires a new grad in the ED is not a place I would want to go to in an emergency.

I am a ADN student and I work in an ED as a tech. I can't imagine why a new grad would want to work there. You have to have incredible assessment skills and be able to balance interventions/treatments for serious co-morbidities in a fast-paced environment. Why would you want to put that additional pressure on yourself while orienting not only to a new job but to a new career?

I'm sure there are nurses that started their careers in emergency and are incredible nurses. My guess is that they are the exception and not the norm.

If you really want to be an ED nurse...get a good year of Tele in lieu of Med/Surg. Your cardiac experience is more transferable.

Best of luck in whatever job path you choose.

mt auburn does not hire new grads into thier ed. beth israel and bwh do.

MassRN: I just got hired in an ED as a new grad at a hospital in north eastern MA so don't go to that E.D. One thing that you should think of is that not all new grads only have experience as LNA/CNA or being a tech, or in some cases none at all. I have almost 10 years of EMS experience 3 of them being as a paramedic so I am perfectly comfortable starting in an ER. Not everyone likes the same thing and some new grads like excitement and like me hate the idea of doing floor nursing. I can also assure you that managers of these E.D.'s are not juts hiring any new grad that comes to their door, they are much more picky than regular floors.

Strahd: I am not sure what your backround is, but if you do not have any emergency experience I would at least do a couple of days of job shadowing to make sure the E.D. is right for you. I am not sure how far away from Boston you are looking for, but Saints Medical Center in Lowell, MA is hiring new grads into their ER. The web address is www.saints-memorial.org just go into the job listings. good luck
