Hi there
I just wanted to find out if this situation that I am gonna mention ever happened to them and what did they ever do about it?
Okay, last night it felt like I was busy no chance to sit down except for breaks. One of the nurses started shift and came up to me and ask 'Do you need any help'. I thought well since you asked yah because I was running a little bit behind schedule. So I asked her to do something for me related to IVAB. We both go in and I thought she was gonna do it for me since she asked if I needed help. Nope she just checked the drug and sign the label and left instead of hanging it up for me. I was like :trout:
:smackingf WHAT THE HECK JUST HAPPENED.
So in the end I was just flabbergasted and amazed. So I said to myself if that is ever to happen again. I might just get that person just to do my vitals rather than do IVAB. I just saw this coworker in a different light. I am not one to say anything right away. However, if I am to help anyone out I go forth and help them out.
So that is my beef, truly irrated me. Usually I rather do my tasks on my own without no help. Thinking I am getting some assistance was gonna be a relief, that wasnt to be, pfftt.
I know...it's going to be a lot different when we go smoke free (as of 1/1/07).
I do work with a few who will take a few smoke breaks and eat a little bit while they're doing that, and then not take a meal break.
It just irks me when I'm really busy and other people are jus tsitting around, and nobody offers to help me. But here's what I do:
"Hey Susie, do you have a minute to help me out?" Then I just ask them to do the easiest thing. Sometimes by just having someone give pain meds for me, it takes a little bit of the stress away and helps dig me out of my hole. I'm not too proud to ask for help, but I'm *usually* lucky...most of the peopel I work with will offer to help. We always check on each other. Usually the answer is "no thanks, I'm fine", but when it's not, it's nice to work as a team.
The last unit I worked for in the hospital - post anesthesthia ambulatory surgery was the most non-team oriented place I'd ever seen in my life. I would come in in the afternoon and have a little time sometimes to help others, but most of them wouldn't accept it! So I'd look around for things I could do for them without them asking - like setting up their IV's for admits, etc.
I came to that unit from a very team centered ICU that worked beautifully and I hoped to show by example how that can work - but none of them would ever do anything to help me or anyone else. The place was a snake pit.

Wow! I think you worked in MY ambulatory surgery unit, since it sounds exactly the same. The most miserable bunch of people I have ever worked with in my life, and probably the cushiest job in the whole hospital (most of the time). (By the way, they get really mad if I say that!) In fact, I have heard nurses from other areas refer to our unit as "Mecca"! Little do they know what the people are like..:gandalf:

Grrrr. Some nurses can't spare the time to take a meal break. Others can't even take the time to go to the loo and yet others nick out for a smoke.
What gives? We have a few smokers on the ward where I usually work and they go out three or four times a shift for a cigarette break. They're usually gone 5 or 10 minutes. I wonder how well it would be accepted if I decided to sit down, off the ward, for a coffee break as often as that? Grrrrr. :angryfire :angryfire
