I have a possible job opportunity and I'm trying to decide what to do. A major hospital system in my area is getting ready to convert to Epic and is hiring analysts and trainers. I'm probably giving away too much info, but whatever.

Just wondering if anyone has experience with this product and/or company what you think?

As a traveler, I have used Meditech in three of my last three assignments. Epic is much easier and more logical in the windows and usefulness. It is a pretty easy system to use after being oriented to it.

Good luck,

The hospital that I work at is going to change over to Epic. I found out Friday that I got one of the team lead positions for Documentation. I can not offer you alot of information, just only what I have been able to find out over the past month. The Epic system is exciting and one of the best out there. If you get a job as an analyst you will be go to Epic's training center, in WI, 3 times for what looks to be 3-4 days at a time to get your certification. It looks like the only way to become an Epic certified analyst is to 1. work for epic or 2. work for an organization that uses Epic. I have been wanting to get into nursing informatics for sometime now. I will be leaving for my first trip to WI on the 18th of April. If this is at all helpful to you in any way, I wouldnt mind keeping you posted on what the process truly intels once I have actually been there!

Scooter is correct in that you will ahve to go to WI for training but the 3 trips for 2-3 days per trip is for one certification (probably ambulatory). With each certification you go back for more training and there are many (perhaps dozens) of certifications available for Epic. Our hospital has had Epic for over 4 years now and I love the system. It's a great opportunity to learn a good system. If you get the opportunity and this is what you have a passion for, then I'd say go for it!!

We have EPIC where I work. The implementation was huge, and everyone associated worked long hours but was very valued. I think it would be a great opportunity. It is a very good program that has a TON of room to grow, no matter what versions go live. Good luck with your decision!

Thanks guys. I'm an RN and used to work for this hospital system. I currently enjoy the job I have now, but in my past life (before nursing) I was a business analyst. So this might be a good opportunity to merge lives.

Epic has a lot going for it. It tracks more closley to a generic Windows or Mac application as opposed to what I would call the very "programmer-centric" functionality of a system like Meditech. This allows users to pick up the system more ease.

Our hospital just went live with the "Care Everywhere" Epic module which has great potential. For example, OHSU is a level 1 trauma center just to the north of us where a good number of our patients receive specialty care. Since both hospitals use Epic we can share patient records electronically rather than the printing, copying, faxing that we are normally hassled with.

I would love to assist in an Epic implementation.

I have used several EMRs, primarily Meditech, and from what I have read and looked at, Epic appears to be one of the best.

Good luck!

Hello :)

I am very interested in this field. But I have no experience. How can I get started. Is there a class or certification I can take. Thanks for your help.

I am a 20+ years bedside nurse and joined informatics a few years ago. I have two oppportunities to decide between. One is a Cerner Applications analyst and one is an Epic Applications Analyst. I am trying to decide which system is best to become tied to and become an expert in.

thanks for any advice. for those nurse who are interested in informatics I recommend . i took my first course there online and am now in a masters program at UIC! love this new career path and am very interested to find out how others are making this transition and dealing with missing the bedside care aspect of nursing.

thanks :)

I got involved because the hospital I work for is going to Epic. I applied for the position as a credentialed trainer as well as several other nurses. We are now implementing Epic in the first of three hospitals. I absolutely love it! The nurses and the physicians are....hesitant but they are adjusting. If you want to work directly for Epic I think you would have to be willing to go to Wisconsin and travel to different hospitals (organizations) that are implementing the EHR.
