Hi everyone~ Just wondering if anyone has failed (or is worried about failing) and have a start date for their job shortly after they took the NCLEX? I take my boards two weeks before starting by job and am just wondering what will happen if I fail? I'm optimistic and am studying hard each day, but I just like to look at all possibilities just in case the dreaded thing like failing would happen. I know hospitals can't obviously have you doing RN work, but I thought I heard they can't fire you either. Do you just do assistant stuff until you pass? Just curious...

Most people in my area start immediately after graduation as a GN, or graduate nurse. They function basically as an RN until they take and pass boards. There is a grace period (I think 6-8 weeks) where you can practice as a GN until you test. If you either don't take boards within that time, or fail your first attempt, you are downgraded to a nurse tech, basically a CNA, until you retake and pass your boards. I would imagine that the hospital will either retract their job offer, or offer you a tech postition until you pass (if you fail your first attempt.) But you will pass with flying colors!!! GOOD LUCK!!

that was actually a fear of mine also. i start working in 2 weeks, and originally i had my test scheduled for after i began orientation. i changed it though and took it this past monday (i passed) because i didn't want to have to start orientation and then have to drop out midway if i didn't pass. i'm glad i took a chance and took it early. you'll do well. be confident and believe in yourself. good luck. :)
Thanks for your responses! I'm glad I have two weeks before I start so I will for sure know whether or not I passed by that time. Congrats Tmarie on passing!
