I've been a nurse for 5 yrs. and I'm wanting to take a break. I want to open a weekend restaurant/buffett (GOOD southern cooking, not southern slop! I'm so disappointed in most of the restaurants down south...)I can keep the overhead low because I will have the restaurant on my property and I plan on doing most of the leg work. I just need a change of pace for awhile to pursue other interests.

I definitely plan to keep my license active, pick up a day a week or something. I worked too hard for my license to let it go.

I was burned out with nursing after 20 years so I went back for a degree in computers. It didn't take me long to figure out nursing is not so bad after all. I couldn't deal with office politics and back stabbing. At least with nursing you can work three 12-hour shifts, come in and do your job and they're just happy that you showed up. Now I'm back in nursing with the knowledge that the grass is not always greener on the othe side.

I took a 4 year break due to health reasons, partially induced by the stress of nursing. I missed the patients a lot but not the political garbage. When I went back I was real careful about the job and how much stress there would be. I know we can't always tell that, but I know it is important to take care of me. Sometimes taking a break is the best way to take care of ourselves. Good luck with whatever you decide.

When I've gotten burned out, I've changed positions all while at the same time trying to advance my career. I did take a slight sabbatical out of healthcare for about a year ~ I worked at a life insurance company doing medical underwriting ~ and I hated it the corporate lifestyle and missed healthcare. I also worked pool during that time to keep my skills current.

The current job I'm in (patient education) I love and actually feel well paid for once!
