Anyone applying to the Duke ABSN program for Fall 2009 (c/o 2011)?

Published

I submitted my completed application on November 23rd and I'm anxiously waiting. I attended the open house in September and fell in love with the program. I just thought I would check in here and see if anyone else is in the same boat. It would be interesting to have someone to commiserate with during this awful waiting game :) :typing

Thanks for the encouragment :) Yes I got an e-mail saying the decision was posted on my application. Good luck to you, I'm sure you will be getting an e-mail soon! I know it is so nerve-wracking to have to wait. Good luck to you too! I'm crossing my fingers for us!

Congrats on making it onto the wait list...do you know if you don't get in on the wait list if they will give you an admission for the January start? That might also be a good option.

EarthyGirl, I hope you hear something soon!

I have no idea, SFChef. Do schools actually do that? Thanks for the congrats, good luck to everyone who applied for a scholarship! God knows everyone could use some financial assistance!

I have no idea if they would do that, but if I were on the wait list, that would be one of my first questions. I mean, they've already decided that you are admitted - you're on the waiting list until a space becomes available. Why not just let you defer until January? It makes sense to me (although a lot of things make sense to me, and that never changes anything). I don't think that 12 people on the wait list seems like very many, so your chances of getting in are probably good. Let's face it, Duke isn't the cheapest school and the economy sucks, so surely some people will decline just because of the cost.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

12 people on the wait-list is not many at all... I am currently considered an attending student and will be giving up my spot to attend another school and am informing Duke this week. While I LOVE Duke as a school, it does not have the MSN specialty that I want to matriculate into (Womens Health) and will be attending a school that will. So there is one more spot open!

Good luck to you all who are going there in the fall... I was so hoping I could be there with you.

Thank you MCNS2B for sharing that information. I'm sorry Duke didn't have what you wanted... Good luck at your new school!

E- any news? I thought for sure they would e-mail you today!

Anybody have experience with deferring for a term, or even for a full year? The current state of the economy prevents me from attending in August, as I have to take care of my family before I can consider going back to school. And I'm not sure if my family's jobs are that secure, so I may end up having to help them through the rest of the year instead of contributing to tuition costs.

So you all can knock one off the waiting list as soon as I call in tomorrow to withdraw for the Fall '09. Hope to see some of you at Duke in Spring or Fall 2010.

Saludos,

GF

Hi Everyone! So, I didn't get in for the Fall, but also didn't get the "sorry we can't offer you admission" form letter. After a phone call of encouragement from the chair, I'll be keeping my application on file for the Spring start. They were very encouraging that with a few things to bump up my app even more (take GRE again to bump up my verbal, which was crappy), that I'll have a better outcome decision-wise this summer. So while I'm definitely disappointed, they were super nice about explaining everything and I'm happy that attending Duke may still be in the cards for me.

Apparently, the applicants were greater in quality and quantity for the Fall 2009 start, so since all of you have made it, be proud and congrats again!

Earthygirl,

I love your positive attitude! Duke is definitely in the cards for you. If the desire and the will are there, the product will soon follow :)

I'll be wishing you the best of luck for the Spring 2009 start. The Duke faculty and staff members are very supportive and encouraging, as you have mentioned. So they'll do whatever they can to help you with everything. Trust me, Melissa was a great resource for me through this entire process. She's so great! As for the GRE (that wicked little monster), I studied word roots for the whole summer to help with my verbal (for some reason, my writing and math pretest scores were super high, but my verbal always sucked). I wish you the best, and if you need anything or want to bounce any ideas off of someone, feel free to pm :)

earthygirl,

I'm new to the blog, but have been reading over the past few days to ease my anxiety over hearing a decision from Duke. I interviewed for the ABSN program on Jan. 16th and did not hear until yesterday that I was also not accepted. I did get a an email letter asking me to keep my app. open and I also am definitely going to do so.

First, it was encouraging to hear that we are in the same boat and that you also have a positive attitude about giving it another shot. Second, I believe it is a strong point that we were being considered for so long...if they had known that they did not want us they would have declined early on. I have a few questions for you that I hope you will answer. Did you call the chair and did they give you any answers that you were looking for? Also, are you considering applying to any other schools?

Congratulations to everyone who will be starting in the Fall. I met some extremely exceptional people at my interview and know that they will all exceed as nurses at Duke! Thanks, jdcurly, for starting this blog!

Jdcurly - Thanks for the well wishes! Yes! I love how everyone is so unbelievably helpful at Duke. It's the personalized attention and the willingness to help us are seriously some of my top reasons why I think Duke is such a great place...you certainly don't find that everywhere! Best of luck to you. Are you so excited?!

NRG - Congrats to you as well with the encouragement to keep your app open! It's nice to see someone else in the same boat as me. To answer your questions, I will be applying to some other schools. I'm actually moving to Durham this summer (unrelated to Duke SON) so I'm going to apply to UNC for the Jan. start as well. Duke is where I want to be though, so fingers crossed that it works out.
