Anyone Applying to Antelope Valley College RN program

Published

I didn't see a thread on AVC nursing so I just made one for everyone. IS anyone applying to AVC nursing or in the program already? The person working at the department told me it would be like 3 semester waits. I'm expecting to get in around fall 2011 or spring 2012 since I turn in my application around October 2010. Anyone in the program already, would you please share your experience. Anyone who is about to get in the program, can you please tell me how long you've waited since the time you turn in the application?

Thanks everyone!!!

She said the list isn't final yet. They still have one more group of people to take the test and they will mail letters in November. When I called them at the beginning of the month, they said I was 56, but on te list they passed around, I was 41 so I think I'm safe =))))).

That's good to hear...Earlier this week, I was told that I am still number 29 and there was only 2 people that has to take the test today. I hope we make it! I don't get to attend the session till next Friday. One of my friends classmates went today and said that she will be scheduled for the orientation. That's why I was asking if anyone attended...because I thought the results wont be out till November.

I am just in a rush because the last day for me to accept COC is on the 26th...I was hoping to get in AVC so I dont have to drive that far ( 5 days/week)...

Thank you for the info...Keeping my fingers crossed :yeah:

BTW...did they give out info for background check? I just submitted the one for COC today and I'm wondering if its the same company so I dont have to pay again...

Thank you.

Well, it sounds like you have a good chance. She told us if you're an lvn, you're pretty much in. She talked about the orientation, but nothing was set yet. They did pass out background checks. They use certifiedbackground.com. They also passed out the physical papers, info, and the drug test info

Hey guys,

So I attended the informational session today and thought I unferstood the immunization paperwork entirrly but now im a bit confused. Im gona ask -------- again on monday but if u guy can help answer my question before monday would be hgelpful lol. From wat I understand , you need to be vaccinated end get tb test before rntering the program. It said that u need two dose of measle/munp/rubella, two dose of chicken pox, three series of hepatitis b. A titer are rewuired if the last dose was more than five years prior to the physical exam. Well the problem I have is that I know for sure I jave been vaccinated with all these when I was little u know for schol requirement. The thing is I dont have the immumization record so I dont know the actual date of last vaccination. I do know its more than five years. Wt I want to know is can I just go ahead and get vaccinated or do I have to get a titer first?

And if I am require to get a titer, and the titer show I do have the protection, does that mean I dont need to get the vaccine and just turn in my titer results only? But if titer show that im not protected, then I must get the vaccine? Is that how it works? im sorry I just feel so confused.

I just wanted to get vaccinated and skip the whole titer thing. The problem is I dont know if I have been vacvinated before and titering can show if I do or not, but it wil cost alot more money to get titer!

Anyways if anyone ben thru this can u please clarify the whole process for me. Thanks thanks a bunch!!!

Hey, I have the same problem. My shot records were lost a while ago. From what I understand, you can do either, have all the doses within the last 5 years, or a titer. I went to kaiser last month to start the shots cuz I thought I needed those, but they wanted to do the titers instead of having me do all te shots. All my tests came back I was immune, but if any came back that showed I wasn't immune, I would have to start the series of shots. Idk why kaiser wanted to do the titers if the shots are cheaper, but that's what my dr wanted me to do. I hope this cleared up some, and if I am wrong on any of this, please let me know after you talk to --------. It was confusing to me, too, but that's how I ended up understanding it.

hi ladies...you can get your blood drawn for the titer first then any that you are not immune, you start the vac.

@catsolares...coc uses a different company for background checks. i guess i have to pay again to have it done. but i'll wait next friday to ask then if i can use the one from coc.

@munkeyann...yey! i have a chance to attend avc...it does cost more to do the titer but if you are already immunized why suffer the reactions from the vac?...im not sure if the md will only give you a booster but if youre not immune, i think you need to get the series.

can you tell me when is the due date for all the requirements please? appreciate the info...thanks

@mayelvn- she said it had I be from certifiedbackground.com. They won't take it from anywhere else. It's 50 dollars for this place. She talked about deadlines a little for lvns, but I don't remember any of them. Sorry =(

hi everyone,

thanks for the reply. It was really helpful. I think I understand how it works now. and Yes i will talk to -------- on Monday or Tuesday just to confirm everything.

Let say if someone has their immunization records (the yellow card- which i obvious dont have, cant find it!), and if all the vaccines has been up to date, within the last five years then theyre good. Just need to attach the copy of immunization record for the nursing program. No need anymore vaccination.

But I guess in my case, I don't have the records. Even if i had the vaccines within five years to this date, I would still need a titer drawn since i got nothing to prove i had it. So titer is the only way to prove whether or not i have immunity to whatever im testing for.

So that being said, and thanks to catsolores, I will definitely go get a titer. I got no choice! (aggghh...that 's gonna be expensive). I dont think I can just request them to give me the shots. Doctors just want to be safe and check if u have been immuned or not. I heard from some people getting vaccinated again, even though u already got the immunity can cause some kind of reaction. I don't want to risk my health =D !!! So titer it is! Hopefully I am as lucky as Catsolores on having all the titer positive, that way i dont need to spend anymore money for the vaccinations lol!

@Maylyvn- hi! Same here I dont remember much about LVN, but it wasnt much. Sorry, I was paying attention to my RN. But I do remember about her mentioning how LVN has to finish all their application (background check, drug test, and the Physical exam) before Class start which is in January. And that its better to get it all the paperwork done as soon as u can so that you can register for the nursing class and pick your clinical time. Oh she did mention about LVN not having their own mandatory information session, its all going to be in their handbook. About your insurance requirement, when you purchase it, make sure to make the effective date relevant to when you start your program. Like for RN student, insurance effective date is 2/6/12. For LVN, im assuming its somewhere in Janurary 2012. I dont remember the actual date she mention for lvn, sorry. But overall, there wasnt any specific due date for the drug test and insurance and background and physical exam. Its just the sooner the better. For example, if u do need the vaccination, then its best to start now. Because all of them require like 2 doses (xcept the hepatitis-need three series) that are couple weeks apart. And if u get all ur paperwork done, then the nursing department will let u register for class. Otherwise, its off limit until everything is clear. So its like first come first serve! I want to pick the teacher I want and the clinical time that I want.

Oh right, for the background check, the website is like wat catsoleres said. Go to the website, click on "students" and enter the package code for ur specified program: AK48.

And thats about it. I hope that helps.

Oh by the way, has anyone here done their drug test and physical exam at the school health department before? The Care-a-Van?

Because i found a few public health clinic and it suppose to be like a free or low cost clinic. I havent call them yet but here is the info if anyone wants it.

In lancaster:

Antelope public Health Center 661-723-4624 or 4511

Antelope valley community clinic 661-942-2391

in palmdale:

Antelope public health center 661-575-0009

they offer immunizations, but for titer im not so sure. I will be calling them next week to find out.

anyways, thanks everyone. Sorry for such a long post :nurse:

oh right. forgot to mention. the program's immunizations paper requirement states that either you get the vaccines

OR

attach a copy of the titers results or a copy of the immunization records. But if last dose was more than five years, then titer require.

Going straight to the vaccine sounds good if you dont have the records, but i think it could be risky. so titer is best. Besides, we all pretty much have these vaccines in us since we were a child. So titer would be positive and no need vaccinations. Just turn in the titer results.

i think it depends on your doctor or the clinic u go to whether or not a titer is really needed or just going straight for the vaccine despite the chances that you might already have the immunity in you.

AH! I just wrote this huge reply to you guys and it just got deleted! =( Let's try this again...

1. Get all your immunizations etc done asap so you can start reading! Read, and be organized. Start reading Taylor's only! Vital signs chapter and fluid and electrolytes. You will be practicing vital signs the first 2 days of lab.

2. Know your powerpoints like there is no tomorrow. Memorize them word for word.

3. The teachers are awesome and will help you with anything.

4. Be comfortable with math. Dosage calculation, conversions.

5.Make friends. Don't be surprised when you start crying a lot and feel lonely. Spend time with your friends/families now!

6. You will be studying every day and every hour with no breaks, or free time.

7. Clinical is a cool experience. You will have your good days and bad. Some pt's/nurses will not like you. Do your thing and just get out of their way.

So I am going to the session tomorrow...but I have already got my shots from COC...Do we need Hep A titer as well? Coz I only got the Hep B. If you guys have insurance, it is covered (titers, Tdap, flu shot and mantoux test) For the drug screen, Care-a-van is at AVC on Thursdays. I'm not sure how much exactly. You have to go to SVC 180 (where you get your ID) and make an appointment coz the van is only there on Thursdays. You can have your immunization and titers done with them as well.

@munkeyann...thank you for the code...I had to pay $50 more for the background check. And you were right @ catsolares, AVC only takes certified background. The process took 3-5 days...

I saw the schedules at AVC last night. The transition starts on Jan 3 for 5 weeks....looks hectic...:uhoh3:

Hope this helps... :)
