Anyone applied to UF's accelerated BSN?

I applied to UF's accelerated BSN program for Summer 2009. The application deadline passed 2 weeks ago, and I am anxiously awaiting a reply. I hate waiting! If anyone has been through the program, I was wondering if you remembered when you found out if you got in or not. Is anyone out there also waiting to find out if you got into the program?

Thanks! I know where that is now that you say that. I am pretty sure I will be able to make it, I don't have to be at the hospital until 3:30 unless I get called in early.

Great! Have a nice weekend!

Also are there any other guys who are starting the program???

I don't know about ya'lls program of course, but this year we had like 8 guys I think. I would think they'd probably try and admit about the same number if possible...

Hey guys, I'm not sure if any of you care or anything, but they sent out the emails about the football ticket lottery today and I just wanted to encourage you to enter. I didn't because I didn't like football and thought I wouldn't have the money but a lot of the nursing students went together and I wish I could have gone with them. Something to think about :)

Yes, you definitely want to enter the lottery! Even if you don't go, it's pretty easy to sell the tickets-a student ticket for a rival game can easily sell for as much as it costs to buy the whole season's worth of tickets, so it's unlikely that you'll lose any money even if you don't go. I'm so glad I get another football season. :D

Hi Guys,

Have you gotten an e-mail from Ken? I saw it this morning. There was an information about books:

"You first semester books are now available in the Health Science Bookstore. All of your required books for the first semester have been packaged in to one box at a discounted price. This box costs 590.43$ cost and weigh about 27 pounds.

There is an addition box of recommended books that cost 154.52$. These are only recommended materials."

The Health Science Bookstore may be reached by calling (352) 392-3478."

Do you think we will need an addition box of recommended books? Honestly, I have NO idea. Any advise?

Do not waste your money and spend $700 on first semester books! I probably didn't even spend $700 on textbooks for the whole program. Buy used, wait to see what the teacher says you will actually need, it's okay to buy older editions most of the time - there are many ways to save money.

Thanks for the advice!! One of my friends also said that she doesn't use the texts as much as the internet because the texts were written as much as 5 yrs before we get them and they are no longer current. She also buys used books from amazon, and for most classes, she can buy the previous edition for about $5.

Apprecite you taking the time to explain this to us!

Also, not sure if this is allowed here but I was just cleaning out my office. I have the Health Assessment textbook if they're still using the Jarvis book. It's in mint condition (no highlighting or anything, looks brand new), 4th edition. It has a sealed CD and then I have another one open, probably the one needed for the online quizzes. I'm sure it would be okay to use a previous edition because nothing really changes drastically in assessment of the human body, and the test questions come straight from the notes anyway for that class. You can buy the online access code separately on Amazon.

I also have the Manual of Medical-Surgical Nursing Care by Swearingen, 6th ed. No highlighting in text.

If anyone's interested, PM me and make me an offer. I just want to get rid of them and will match what it's going for on Amazon, half.com, etc. I still live in Gainesville so we could meet up and you won't have to pay shipping.

One more thing I thought of, in patho and pharm my friends and I split up the material and made study sheets which I think really helped. I might still have some of them on my computer and would be happy to email them to anyone who's interested.

Hi Galore,

Sounds interesting. I'd like to see patho and pharm info (study sheets). Also, I am interested in textbooks. Could you give me your e-mail?

Thanks for sharing this with us.

Since a few of you have already requested the charts, I'm going to see if it will let me upload the charts here. Hopefully it works, and you can all just download them from one central location. I will point out that while I think studying off the charts is helpful, I think it is most helpful when you make your own charts because it forces you to go through the notes and pick out what is most imporant.

Let me know if you can download them from here, and then I'll see what pharm. charts I still have on my computer.

I don't know if this will help you guys in the UF program, but I rent textbooks for my prereqs. My A&P textbook is over $200 brand new at the bookstore but I rented it for $44 for a semester term on www.chegg.com. They consider a semester about 4 months long, that's how long I was given to return my copy. The book is practically new, only slightly used. I'm taking A&P 1&2 during two 6-week summer sessions so for me it was worth it and plenty of time to use it and return it! Will have to buy my lab manual on campus but it's not as expensive as the text. I typed in a few of the titles that Galore posted above as examples and they seem to carry them.

Does anyone know which NCLEX review book is recommended by the school?

TIA!
