So I had a job interview and almost got the job (just waiting on background check) at a blood bank working as a Apheresis nurse. Since I worked as a phlebotomist in the past and I really loved my job, I thought this would be a perfect job for me! I was just wondering if any of you are nurses at a blood bank?

I worked for a hospital-based blood bank before becoming a nurse and most of that time was in donor apheresis (platelet and granulocyte collections mainly).

Do you know whether it's donor, therapeutic, or a mix? My hospital also had a separate unit (all nurses, no techs) that performed therapeutic procedures and stem cell collections. That unit was under the umbrella of the BMT department and was completely separate from the blood bank.

It would be mixed with donors and therapeutic. How did you like it?

That sounds interesting-I never heard of an Apheresis nurse. I also used to be a phlebotomist, and this would be right up my alley!

Well, I guess I will one of very FEW apheresis LVN's.... I got my offer today contingent upon my drug screen of course! Anyway... Im excited to start working as an LVN and will keep Y'all updated on my progess!!!

I have been an apheresis RN for over 20 years and I love it! I work in a hospital based unit under the direction of a transfusion medicine physician. We perform plasmapheresis, red-cell exchanges, platelet and white cell depletions, as well as therapeutic phlebotomies. Log onto Advance for Nurses and type in apheresis; I wrote an article on apheresis nursing in OCT 2009. Good luck on your new job!
