I only recently graduated from nursing school, and only had a job two months in a hospital before realizing this is not what I went into nursing for!! I'm thinking of other options. Anybody else have this happen?
I got a job working part time at a pediatrician's office right out of school. When I moved tried the hospital bit but that lasted a month..will never ever go that route again! You can certainly find jobs besides hospitals and nursing homes.
I think what really did me in was I started at the VA and there just wasn't time to take care of patients (18) and I started on nights which I've never worked nights and was having a hard time adjusting. It was so hectic and my preceptor was always rushing me (a lot of rushing was so she would have time to go smoke).
So then I came to a smaller local hospital where I had done clinicals and thought the familiarity would help. Well, after 5 days my preceptor (who had only been on the med/surg floor 4 months) left for the ER. She hated that floor and well, to make a long story short, I think a lot of it was very poor orientation on a floor on which I received little or no support. To make it worse I was compared to another person I graduated with who had worked at a larger hospital and had 12 weeks of orientation. I also overheard a night shift nurse talking about me to another nurse -- I just hated it. My nurse manager asked me to transfer to another unit but that was nights and there was no preceptor, just whoever was working that night. I quit the next day.
I sometimes think I should go to the hospital affiliated with the nursing school I graduated from and wait until they start up their 20-week orientation program -- or go to one of their smaller hospitals in the area.
I always wanted to do med/surg but am wondering if that's possible.
