Any Uk nurses that made it to NY??

Published

Just wanted to know how it is going for you an possibly a short summary on your journey??

:D

I'm a nursing student in NY, I'm from the UK, lived here for 8 years now

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

Currently many International students looking for employers in the NY in regards to OPT and work/immigrant visa have struggled as employers in NY don't want to know. Even NY nurses are struggling and some hospitals have closed down so they are looking for work. I guess a lot will also depend on where in NY however you will still be affected by retrogression and a long wait (looking at previous posts you indicate you haven't yet qualified as a nurse)

I should add I'm a resident here because I'm married to an American, if it's your dream to come here I highly recommend going to nursing school in the US, preferably in NY if that's where you want to be, I believe you get a year after graduating to stay in the states and network, not sure about permission to work. The Silerdragon is right getting an H1b or any work visa will be very very difficult right now, I've seen a few UK friends leave the states in the last five years over trouble renewing visas/ changing jobs. The UK people left are married with families and are residents or have residency from an American parent. The amount of foreigners Europeans in particular in NY has dropped drastically in the last 3 years in mt opinion. I think a US nursing degree us a real asset as it's recognized almost everywhere in the world where as UK nursing qualifications are not and often need supplementing abroad. I'm only just applying to nursing school I was a restaurant manager before, I have a long road ahead with all prerequisites to do but I have a bachelors degree in the arts.

The OP is already in nursing school in the UK and qualifies next year. Yes if you train in the US as a International student there is the option to us OPT which allows you 12 months post grad work to gain experience however with retrogression it means nothing because you are still affected. To qualify for H1b you need a minimum of BSN and employer needs to prove they can not employ locally and the job requires a minimum of BSN

hey guys thank for the infor and yes silverdragon I dont qualify in feb of next year, I was generally asking about the transition of any uk trained nurses that has made it to ny as it is a potential state i will in the future be considering. I am also aware of the retrogression thanks, I have seen many post of this information and it was not what I was asking, no disrepect. But thanks once again. x

Good day to you both

I think if you really want to come to NY get a six month tourist visa when you graduate and come and live here for a few months and network. The economy may improve a little by then and conditions to get an H1b may improve, I certainly wouldn't rule out coming to NY if that's what you want to do, unfortunately it's just not what it was even five years ago in terms of the job market but things change.

Thank you anderson, I was considering a tourist visa just to like u said network and possibly even see if I really want to be in the states, I know 6 months aint long but its longer than my usual 2 weeks vacations :D. An yes things might change but im not getting my hopes up im just taking it as it comes and finish first....:up::up:.

If you qualify for the visa waiver scheme, and UK citizens do then getting a B2 tourist visa is next to impossible. As a new grad will be hard also to get H1b and you must have a minimum of BSN plus experience. You can not plan anything until you qualify and meet state requirements as well as pass NCLEX and the biggest hurdle as a UK nurse is meeting requirements due to the nature of training.
