Any other UIC GEP applicants here?

Published

I just applied to the GEP at UIC, for Family NP. I'm so nervous! I guess applicants find out by the end of March if they will be invited for interviews or not, so I'm crossing my fingers. Is anyone else in the boat with me?

I'm also kind of just curious what background other applicants have, as I'm sure it's pretty diverse. I have a background in clinical research at Mayo, Rush, and Northwestern and a B.S. in psych.

Also curious if anyone mentioned interest in eventually getting a Ph.D? I saw on an older thread that someone was passed over b/c they mentioned interest in a Ph.D, however I talked to two nurses who are involved with teaching at UIC and they said they are very open about individuals who are interested in Ph.D as long as it is not their only goal. One faculty member said they were very excited about her interest in getting a Ph.D. So I guess I don't understand why someone would get passed over for mentioning their interest in Ph.D?

Did anyone else apply? Or if anyone has feedback on UIC's program or admissions process, that would be great too!

I got an interview too...what a relief

Congrats to you too. What specialty? Good luck!

Did anyone here apply for Adult NP? I just found out that I got an interview, yay! Do you know how many people are interviewed for the 40 new student slots?

I got the interview too! yay! but now im so nervous. Ped NP for Friday. Good luck everyone!

I applied for the acute care NP program, and I must admit, I am kind of worried about the interview

I just received invitation for an interview for UIC/ACNP specialty. I am going to turn it down because am already accepted in UCSF, so I suppose this will be good for people applying to this specialty(less competition, I guess). I think the interview questions are the standard ones, but why do not you check other threads? Like MEPN/UCSF one has some of the interview questions published. And do not forget to practice in front of the mirror:nuke: Good luck! I know how stressing is this time.

I was wondering how many people they interview too, cuz I was notified by a Mass email to everyone picked to interview for both the women's health specialty and Maternal child nursing, which as I understand it is two different areas ( I'm maternal child nursing)

anyhow, on the email I got there was twenty names in addition to mine......

congrats to everyone from a current UIC GEP student. Just wanted to clarify for dinah77, in case there is any confusion, the Department is called Maternal-Child nursing which encompasses Nurse-Midwifery (my specialty), Women's Health NP, and Pedatric NP. That way there is no confusion if they talk to you about your desired specialty area. Good luck.

Thanks! I am applying for Nurse Midwifery so with any luck I will be in your dept next year ;) I re-read the email after your response, and it says "NMW-WHNP"

Obviously the first part is Nurse Midwifery, but because of the second part does that mean everyone else if also NMW, or part of the larger dept for women's health or other specialties?

In short, am I directly competing with 20 other individuals or are only a portion of those applicants to the same dept as me?

I know it's somewhat futile to keep calculating these odds, but it sets my mind at ease :)

Also as a current UIC student, do you know many people they will accept this for year NWM?

Thanks for your help!

The WHNP is just the Women's Health NP people, the peds do their own seperate stuff. As far as I know/remember they admit NMW and WHNP totally seperately- so if 50 people apply for NMW and 40 people aplly for WHNP you are competing with only the 50 people in your particular area. When I interviewed, they did all the interviews on the same day (NMW and WHNP). When you finish your interview (ours were alone with two faculty members, some other specialties do group interviews) they assign you a score based on GPA, interview, academic history, prof experience, etc. Then based on that score you are ranked and admitted. I could be wrong about some parts of this- it's nothing something we were told but just info I have gleaned over the past couple of years.

I don't know how many they will admit. I think my GEP class had about 9-10 NMW and 3-4 WHNP but I can't remember that well. Good luck.
