Any UCSF Mepn Applicants?

Published

Hi everyone--

Has anyone else out there applied to the UCSF MEPN program? They're supposed to send out letters this month (December) for the interview process. Has anyone gotten a letter yet? Will those that aren't asked to the interview process get a rejection letter now?

Crossing my fingers...!

Actually it was a google group, but be careful as it is not looked too kindly by the moderators of this site. Guess it sound like competition.

Where there is a will there is a way.

Thanks, PotreroLCSW!

I like the idea of getting together before our orientation. If anyone is interested, I have a good place in mind for us to meet and greet (and eat) in the inner sunset (where the main campus is located). Maybe we can set up a date in late May, early June?

Am I a nerd for wanting to go online and buy my stethoscope now? :specs:

No you're not a nerd....because I had the same thought.....

how important is it to have a car and be able to drive to clinicals? I live somewhat close to campus and have not driven in decades. what are the chances i will be placed out of san francisco?

I guess there are probably a lot of "nerds" like us in the program, Hopeful Nurse :) By the way, you messaged me but when I tried to respond, your allnurses account said that you are not set up to receive emails.

Since there is some interest in meeting up ahead of time, I'd be happy to help coordinate it. Can people throw out some dates end of May, beginning of June (when it's more likely that people from out of the area will be here).

Can I suggest Sunday, May 31st?

From what I gather about the clinical sites, you will need your own reliable transportation. Unless you get lucky and get assigned to a site you have easy access to. But, I wouldn't take that risk. It can seriously affect your quality of life - not to mention potentially affect your work.

If I were having a hard time purchasing a car or keeping one in the city, I would consider "renting" a car from a friend or something on a regular basis. I would also look into renting a zipcar or something on a regular basis. I don't know how many students will be at each site, but there is always the chance that you can carpool with someone from the program. Good luck!

Hi Haiku.

As you may have seen in one of my previous emails, the hospitals that are/were used this year included: Alta Bates and Herrick in Berkely, SF Kaiser, SFGH, UCSF, VA Med Ctr in Palo Alto, and Stanford. I think there was only one of all year who has been at Stanford the whole time, and unfortunately has had to drive himself at least once. The chances of having people close to you, as you reside near campus, to carpool with is pretty good, as most people live close/near to campus; although people in my class live from Marin to Los Altos and from SF to Oakland, Berkeley and surrounding cities and many points in between.

The end of the last week, you will most likely have a "play day" of team building in GG Park, where one exercise was geared toward figuring out where people live and who lives near them. We had already figured out our carpools for skills lab in San Rafael and to clinicals. You should be told where your clinical placements are on orientation day, which for us was the Friday before classes started.

At this point I wouldn't sweat it.

SASYR:

May 31 sounds like a great idea. I would love meet everyone before we get thrown into the the thick of it. Anything earlier and I would not be in SF yet. I do not know how to PM in order to give out my email address. Does anyone else know how? It'd be good to be able to share information more freely.

Haiku:

I am also carless. Check out this website: http://campuslifeservices.ucsf.edu/transportation/rideshare/carshare/. I really want to try to do without a car b/c of the extra expense (buying it, parking it, insurance). This seems like a good alternative, esp. if carpooling is an option. And if you never end up driving the thing at all, you're only out 25 bucks a year. This is my plan at least...that, and hoping and praying that I don't get stationed at Stanford for 12 months (eeh gads, that would suck). Hope that's helpful.

Looks like we have a couple of people interested in getting together around Sunday May 31st (or sometime after that).

I'd like to propose that we meet up at the Crepevine restaurant (a few blocks from the Parnassus campus). I used to work there during college :) It's a casual space with lots of good food options and we'll be able to set up a section of the dining area for our group. I suggest an early dinner (maybe around 6 or 6:30). Brunch/lunch on Sundays in most restaurants in the area is a pretty busy and crowded time). If we set up a date, time and place and announce to any new MEPNers we come across, we could get a good group.

If we book it, they will come :nuke: What do you all think?

Oh and did I mention there are some great pubs within walking distance that we can move the party to?

HEHEHE, great way to loosen up before an intense year.:yeah:

It looks to me from the UCSF academic calendar that classes begin June 15th. But I think someone posted that they begin the 22nd. Does anyone know?

Thanks!
