Any UAB NP students/graduates?

Published

I am considering applying to UAB online either ANP or ACNP and was wondering if anyone could comment on the program? How do they like it? How much time committed per week? Full or part-time? Is the faculty readily available to help/answer questions? Also, I'm having a difficult time deciding between ANP or ACNP. Is it true that if you are ACNP you can sit for the ANP test as well? I'm leaning towards ANP, but have 8+ years in SICU, so thinking ACNP would be better suiting. However, I'm thinking about post-graduation and finding a job and having reasonable hours with no call. Anyone have any thoughts?

I had 3.6, a friend of mine had less than a 3.0, which I was shocked she got in! Does this help?

Have been an RN for 25 years, currently the last 10 or so in psych. I had an overall 3.23 which I pulled up from a 2.65 during my younger years (1985). My last 60 hours gpa was a 3.44. I also finished 3 grad classes with my undergrad degree. I had great references (one is a instructor at UAB SON whom I had worked with for a few years) Instate gets first preff, then the mobility students, rest is filled in with others. They are planning on decreasing the amount taken in (BSN portion of study) from 120 to 100. (I was privileged to sit on a meeting about this, heard strait from the dean!) It is going to get more and more competative due to the economy, we have many cc in the area churning out ADN's and UAB will not hire you unless you sign an agreement to began seeking a BSN within 2 years of your hire date. We need 80% of our RN's to have a BSN or higher and are currently only at 60% maybe? This is a requirement of the ANCC for our Magnet status.

Specializes in PICU.

This is just an educated guess, but I think grades matter as a way to determine if the student will be able to survive the requirements of grad school. If you have done poorly in prior "easier" courses the thought is you won't make it through the grad courses because they are significantly harder and require more work and learning at a very fast pace. If your GPA isn't stellar, but you know you have the time and dedication to make it through grad school, then try to demonstrate that in the other areas of your application. I'm guessing that's why there is such a variance on who is accepted based on past GPAs. And it does go both ways, if you have a 4.0 but don't seem dedicated enough in your application, then they aren't going to accept you. It takes a lot of commitment and time to get through the program, so I would suggest to anyone applying that you emphasis that in your application. Some schools do seem to only consider GPA, but UAB doesn't seem to be one of them.

I realize these posts are older. But I was wondering if anyone applied to UAB's PNP program for Fall 2012? I have a few questions.

Thanks
